Possible but unlikely. However, it is hard for modern man to grasp how fragile life is and how fortunate we have been for the past 15-20k yrs. One of the primary reasons for the apparent lack of intelligent life in the galaxy is b/c the universe is amazingly hostile to life.

Well, if it happens every 12,000 years or so, mammals and humans must have worked it out pretty well in the past.

This was my thought as well

Shipping records. We have been taking records of the magnetic poles versus the geographic poles before the 1600s. Apparently every five years shipping charts were updated to help keep ships on course with the geographic poles as the magnetic poles shift. The same thing is done now on modern navigation devices. It just a software update like on your iPhone or the Garmin on your boat.

Ok. But I'm asking about the gnarly reversal graphic. It's 12000 years worth of guessing?

I don't know. If I run across more information I'll post it.

Anyway, as a couple of guys have pointed out, extinction events likely did not occur to the level you're envisioning. Pretty spry regeneration I'd say.

Weed will be known as “deew” after the Pole Shift.

Forewarned is forearmed.

I think this is correct. I've also read the safest locations during a flip are on the 30 degree longitude line. That's good news for Gulf Coast baws. Still probably going to freeze our asses off.

Latitude... y'all are like -90 longitude range.

I have to imagine there will be major weaknesses in the magnetic field that will allow the sun's electromagnetic radiation into those areas. It also depend on intensity in terms of magnitude and direction from the sun. The electronics in these areas would not fair to well without a protective magnetic field with a strong coronal mass ejection directed toward that area. I guess you could store your vital electronics in those old steel sheds. They should act as a pretty effective Faraday cage.

There may actually something to this theory a lot of circumstantial evidence to support this theory.

How long do we have left btw?

Don't know much of about the correlation to an extinction event, but magnetic reversals and the paleontology fossil records are geologically preserved and I suppose could be easily time-correlated.

Earth's geomagnetic field is fascinating, perhaps the prime reason for life being possible, protecting us for solar and other cosmic radiation sources. Without it we'd be crispy critters, fried by radiation.

Magnetic North varies, is tracked and noted on navigation charts as declination. I think presently it's only a few degrees in our area relative to true, geographic north. It's moving towards Russia.

The geomagnetic equator varies as well relative to the geographic, and in periods of high Solar activity plays havoc on civil and military GPS systems, mainly during the sunspot cycle period known as Solar Max. Nasa tracks Space Weather for this and other purposes with a satellite called SOHO, and issues daily forecasts. Solar flare and CME caused GPS scintillation disturbs satellite signals within the red lines below. It can be a real problem for offshore O&G Ops off of Africa and Brazil, and aviation.

I'd be more worried about a Quasar exploding and sending narrowly focused Gamma Rays our way having more energy than the entire Milky Way. We'll see it coming, at 100 light years away brighter than our Sun.

Interesting stuff, I enjoy these scientific threads.

The point I'm trying to make is to illustrate the importance of the magnetic field on earth to sustain life.

Along with every other minute detail that if it were off by .000000000000000000000000001 % in the perspective of the size of the universe, would result in the planet we live on being uninhabitable.

Anyone who has the basic understanding of how the universe works, and looks at the vastness of space/time has to acknowledge that it DID NOT just fall together by chance.

Absolutely no way that could happen. Period.
