Magnetic pole shift and extinction events.

Apparently we ("modern man") have been tracking the magnetic poles since 1590. Here is a historical tracking of earth's magnetic poles:
LINK
The green circle is geographic north and south poles. The purple through gold circles are the magnetic poles tracked since 1590. As you can see the north magnetic pole is migrating toward Siberia away from the the geographic north pole. The southern magnetic pole is currently almost in sync with the geographic south pole.
Questions:
Apparently the magnetic poles flip about every 12,000 years. Is this time interval correct because I've seen varying time intervals?
This is what the magnetic poles look like during a flip or reversal:
Do extinction events occur during filpage?
I would say potentially yes and here is my hypothesis why. Earth has a magnetic field due to its iron core. The magnetic field shields the earth from solar electromagnetic radiation effectively deflecting most of the solar radiation back into space.
Without the earth's magnetic pole the sun's solar radiation would strip the earth's atmosphere away starting with the lower molecular weight molecules in the atmosphere first. The gas in the atmosphere with the lowest molecular weight is water followed by argon, nitrogen, oxygen then carbon dioxide (which has the highest molecular weight and the heaviest).
During a magnetic reversal the earth's atmosphere would potentially be very vulnerable to atmospheric stripping with water first to go. This would lead to a rapid temperature decrease for two reasons:
1. The loss of mass would decrease atmospheric pressure and by the ideal gas law the temperature would drop.
2. The loss of the lowest molecular weight molecule, water first, would cause rapid evaporation from water on earth's surface. Evaporation leads to plummeting temperatures.
The good news is as temperatures drops water will freeze slowing the loss of water into space during this vulnerable time of a magnetic reversal. It's kind of earth's self protective measure.
The bad news is it's going to be damn cold during the magnetic pole reversal and there may be several extinction events.

We need to implement a tax to reverse this
-progfilth (probably)

And this is now somehow already a political thread.
Well done OT.

It’s obviously all conjecture, but everything we think we know about the pole reversals indicates that we are going to have serious fricking problems the next time they flip.

Meanwhile at Twitter headquarters....

Can't we just make a big magnet to hold us in place?

That’s rich coming from your white hating arse.

Glad you mentioned this just as a point of comparison to earth. Mars iron core produces a much smaller magnetic field compared to earth's iron core and most of Mars' atmosphere gets stripped away by the sun's electromagnetic radiation. The lighter atmospheric gases on Mars are stripped away and the heavier gases like CO2 remain. That's why Mars' atmosphere is 95% CO2 and it's atmospheric pressure is approximately 1/20 of earth's atmospheric pressure.
The point I'm trying to make is to illustrate the importance of the magnetic field on earth to sustain life.

Aren’t the migratory patterns of birds somewhat dependent on the earths magnetic field?
I could definitely see a mass extinction event with birds happening. Maybe that ripples through the food chain and biodiversity as a whole drops.

So, this had to be the thread I clicked on right after I smoked.
Was watching the Twilight Zone episode "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", now I'm thinking about this shite.

I think this is correct. I've also read the safest locations during a flip are on the 30 degree longitude line. That's good news for Gulf Coast baws. Still probably going to freeze our asses off.

I've got a shotgun, a rifle and a two wheel drive and a suburban boy can survive.

Is this happening in the next 100 years? Cuz if not I give nary a frick

Yeah, this is something probably for my grandkids to worry about.

I'm sure our big magnet manufacturing capabilities will improve by then so they'll be good

I did a deep dive on this once and IIRC the process takes thousands of years, it wouldn’t be like flipping on a light switch.

I'll ask the common question: If we've been tracking this for 432 years and repoling/flippage is arguably every 12000, WTH did they get the gnarly repoling image from?

Well, if it happens every 12,000 years or so, mammals and humans must have worked it out pretty well in the past.

Shipping records. We have been taking records of the magnetic poles versus the geographic poles before the 1600s. Apparently every five years shipping charts were updated to help keep ships on course with the geographic poles as the magnetic poles shift. The same thing is done now on modern navigation devices. It just a software update like on your iPhone or the Garmin on your boat.
