How hard is it to fire from the shoulder?
I knew a guy who did it for 2 tours in Vietnam.
I asked if it was heavy and he said yea but nothing laid down fire like that thing and it got his buddies out of a few scapes.

You won’t hit much and it’ll hurt. In a year, I never once saw anybody do that. (Saw it in the movies later.) It’s about 40 lbs with short belt in it and significant recoil from the old 7.62 mm NATO. (Mine was a piece of deadly cake mounted on the side of an M113 behind the .50 cal and one didn’t have to hump it.)

It's really heavy and hard to control from up there

Obtuse1, were you 11-bang bang?

Kinda, I was an Infantry officer so technically an 11A but outside paperwork, I don't ever think I heard officers referred to by their MOS.

Like three comments down there's an old grandpa looking baw who served in the bushwar.

Looks about as unassuming as can be... And is likely not to be trifled with.

African FAL. Buddy bought one at a gun show that he didn't know was a gray market gun.

We were walking around when he realized it had a selector. Dealer saw and turned him in to the ATF.

No fun being threatened with jail. For some reason the gun wouldn't fire at all when they sent it in for testing.

Swapped it at a gun show in Dallas for an M16 when he got it back after a couple of months.

I guess you didn’t like my description of how to field strip it. I described it the way the instructors said not to, by opening the cover and pulling the U shaped pin, causing the butt and spring to come out.
If you do this with it cocked, the spring could go flying.

If I may ask, why? I know we all have favoritism towards what we learned on, but what specifically? I want to like the FN FAL more than I do already, but I'm looking to have my expectations moderated from someone with experience.

I wonder how hard that is to fire with the shorter barrel and stock.

Much easier.

The Germans still use a version of the MG42, the MG3.

Stoner 63 was the bomb. It's modular design was way ahead of it's time. Could be fired from a closed bolt using magazines, I think if you flip receiver upside down it's reconfigured to fire from open bolt and belt fed, you acn also set up like a Bren with mag on top open bolt. Light barrel, heavy barrel. 5.56 @ 16# with 100rd box

I want one

Never tried it except for John Wayne a.k.a. Rambo style to get the urge out of my system.

I do know that if your CH-47 door gunner gets frustrated with his Ma Deuce jamming and throws it out the door into the river near Quang Tri, RVN, the United States Government via the USMC will seek reimbursement in an amount slightly over $500, reimbursable via payroll deduction.

Said gunner now having been busted to private will IIRC take 3 to 4 months to fully pay for his momentary frustration.

I really liked that guy.
