He killed a guy who had actual decision making power. He arguably has already caused policy changes, ie the Blue Cross anesthesia reversal. He's garnered substantial sympathy in middle America, which neither of the others was able to do.

I think you're trying to see this through red or blue lenses and a lot has changed. People who don't throw out the pre-Trump political playbook are going to really struggle to understand what's going on in the coming years (and this guy has little to do with Trump, he's just a watershed for political culture in this country).
