Here's how it works: A non-stop fare from Los Angeles to Dallas might be over $300 one-way, but a fare on the same airline from L.A. to Austin with a stop in Dallas might be $150. So you buy the flight to Austin and ditch the plane in Dallas.
Also as known as "point beyond ticketing," most airlines, United among them, have language in their contracts of carriage, which you nominally agree to when you buy a ticket, forbidding this ploy. So United Airlines is suing Skiplagged's founder, asking in the suit for reimbursement of lost revenue and other remedies. Orbitz, an online travel agency, has joined the suit for reasons explained below.

Roundtrip Oslo to Seattle must be a good bit cheaper than Oslo to Seattle to Berlin. You can skip a leg as long it’s the last leg which it was. That’s why they lost.

seems like non-roundtrips always cost more
and flight fares are based more on competition on the route rather than distance when the flights are about the same distance
The big chunk of the distance is Seattle to Europe and then relatively speaking the differences in distance once you get to Europe aren't that much.

This isn't a new thing. I was doing it with the assistance of a friend who was a travel agent 25 years ago.
A business associate from St Louis thought it was a great idea and tried to do it on a round-trip ticket connecting through MSY. I don't remember the other airport, but it was Gulfport or someplace similar. He got off in NO with just a carry-on and his went about his business. When he tried to leave MSY for STL on the second half of his return flight ticket, TWA wasn't having any of that shite. The best part is that he was pissed off at me, even though I never suggested or advised him to do it.

We used to use that technique for traveling between Birmingham AL and DFW, our corporate HQ. We'd buy r/t ticket to Austin and get off in Dallas, tear up the return ticket and buy a one-way ticket back to B-ham (saved a couple of hundred dollars over buying a B-ham / DFW r/t ticket).
I was traveling with my boss once, and he tried to check luggage to DFW. Clerk told him he had to check it to Austin. He ended up getting his ticket cancelled and was forced to buy r/t ticket to DFW at full price.

I used to do that in college. At the beginning of the fall semester and end of the spring semester, I would buy a round trip ticket and no-show for the return leg.

They are trying to protect their bullshite fares. Living in Atlanta I know all about how they rape you for one way tickets to a certain place.
If I am flying from Dallas to Atlanta I have to pay a higher amount than if I am flying to Nashville and jump off at the layover in Atlanta. They threaten to take away status or even bar you from flying if you do it enough.
