The practice is called a throw away ticket where flying through multiple cities is cheaper because they have to fill up flights. If you find the connections and your stop is in the middle it usually is much cheaper than a direct flight. If you do it in the US most airlines will ban you from flying on their airline. This is the first time I have read of an airline bring someone to court over it and I am not surprised it is the Germans.

He found a cheaper way to get to the final destination.
Say you wanted to fly from Atlanta to Baton Rouge but flights were outrageous. You may be able to find a sale flight from Atlanta to Vegas with a stop in pretty NOLA cheap. Then take an additional Nola to BR Flight possibly with a different carrier.
Not all airlines offer flights to your final destionation that make logistical or financial sense. There are now people developing ways to search flight plans including getting off early and still coming out ahead on price.

Well stop pricing my flight back from DC to Charlotte twice as the high as the flight that stops in Charlotte and then goes to Dallas.
Done this 4 or 5 times, savings ~$1200 - $1400
