I am a casual campus observer but in 20 years they’ve built a new business school bldg, school coast and environment bldg, doubled the size of the engineering school building, expanded the vet school, are building a huge new science building where the dairy school was, turned the Huey Long pool into some kind of academic bldg, and have the architecture building undergoing renovations while planning a new huge library…it seems like they are when you step back for a sec and think about it.

1200 kids probably being charged 5500 a semester
13 mill a year.
13 mill a year.

Ironically peak enrollment at LSU was 80s and 90s with about 30,000+.
I think LSU currently runs around 22-23K.
I wish Alabamas was 23k. Way too many students, many from Yankee states.

bough all the trash, rundown homes between I10 and campus and really make a difference
Apparently establishing proper title for most of those homes is near impossible, which is a big reason any project that is going to "displace" anyone in even a few of those shitboxes never generates traction.

You are right but the guy he was replying to is still wrong. The majority of the new building space took out old classroom space and did in fact increase administrative space, but the bulk went to research space and in the new Taylor Hall went to a bunch of open atrium spaces. While nice and good “study” space, they are awful for teaching spaces.
Look, this isn’t an attack on LSU, because all schools are doing it, but they are spending tons of money on wasted things that should go to teaching space. Dorms are a necessity if they are going to require people to live on campus first year, but a bunch of pretty but useful spaces when you are doubling the number of students on campus is ridiculous.
Also, they have not hired enough faculty to keep up with the increase in student body size, so not enough place to teach them and not enough people to teach them well.

Okay, so it’s almost 60% instead of 70%.
It’s possible he didn’t remember the exact number, and your correction doesn’t change his point. No need for the insult.

“Glad they leveled Kirby Smith”
Fwiw they have built three new dorms in Kirby area.. cypress hall etc.. very nice .. a few stories.. they then went over and built camellia hall where the old greenhouse where.. all new builds ..
They were suppose to then tear down or redo all the ones on the little lake over by the old greenhouse.. not sure what is going on there..
I do not understand why the would build on edge of campus toward Burbank area..
Also never understood leaving Kirby footprint as green space.. lots of room to slip one in there between the other three new dorm..
What I really do not understand is why they did not put a multi level garage on the Kirby spot for student parking..
Parkin is terrible.. I believe staff has to buy their spots ?
There has been a lot of updating on campus..

57% isn’t close to 70%
Not talking out of your arse is an extremely simple thing not to do.

Co-worker son who grew up in Katy went to LSU over the Texas schools. In his words after he came back from a visit before deciding, LSU has a lot of scholarship money to give to Texas students and was actively recruiting him to come from Texas. There are not enough kids coming from Louisiana schools to fill the freshman class with the quality that they want.
No. It's not that we don't have "quality students." It's that many quality students are getting far better financial offers in other LA schools or out of state. These students all get into LSU, but they just don't choose to go there.

Well, I wouldn't want them to build it cheaply...

Basically tops subsidize for the instate kids.. and their in state tuition.. the know they can get all the in state fees they want… they want the out of state kids for the out of state tuition..
Why give an instate kid a scholarship in addition of his tops supplement.. you already got him.. throw a few bucks at an out of state kid and bring in his money and the extra tuition fee ( out of state pay twice the in state)…
It is all a money grab.. fwiw I had two kids go to lsu and paid out of state tuition .. but back then out of state tuition was not bad and they also offered a discount on it if you were an alumni.. both of those went away..
Money money money…

Just a few numbers. It was $8000 a year last year for my daughter to live in a dorm that is 57 years old on LSU’ s campus. So in about 22 years this one will be paid for.

5 years ago, the vision shared across campus was pushing parking to satellite lots at the outer edge of LSU property. The thought was resident students could park their cars in secured lots and bus to campus.
Are they still planning to close all core campus roads to vehicles besides buses? They told staff to be prepared to park in the hayfield lots and bus into work. That caused a minor uprising

Also I was kind of surprised that there is almost no housing on campus for those that are moving into their sophomore year.
That's crazy, I lived in dorms almost into my junior year around 2010. I could easily got a room that year too but found a decent apartment.

All the core campus rounds have been closed during the day for at least 20 years. You can only drive around the edge of campus and highland road during business hours

True for public.. staff can still go in and park.. sounds like his post is saying they were changing that? op was saying something about closing and having shuttles to the outer lots..
They have done this sorta.. they have lots all the way out to then new band practice area.. next to the hot dog place on highland ( no idea how to spell it)…. Students park there and walk into campus.. they really Need to step up and get student parking fixed..

They need more parking garages like they built on top of the old Highland dining hall but for residents. It would definitely alleviate it but honestly I wouldn't know, I haven't walked around campus for the last 4 years.

Where is this $215 mil figure from? That is a lot for 1,200 students. Say the dorm last 30 years. 215 mil divided by (1,200 x 30) is $6,000 per student per year which I guess isn't bad, but I feel like 1,200 students could be done for half of that 215 mil figure.
