It was back in the day when they flunked half the class out. A guy walks into Maraist's class on the first day. He is ten minutes late.
"Professor, I am so sorry. I couldn't find a parking place."
"Son, give it a couple of weeks, and that situation will ease up for sure."

Supreme court statement
quote:
PUBLIC STATEMENT
The Louisiana Supreme Court and the Louisiana Judicial College issued the following statement upon the death of LSU Law Professor Frank L. Maraist:
The Justices of the Louisiana Supreme Court and Governors of the Louisiana Judicial College mourn the passing of Louisiana State University Law Professor Emeritus Frank L. Maraist, who served as Executive Director of the Louisiana Judicial College from 1985-1994. Professor Maraist was an icon and truly beloved by all he taught which included scores and generations of Louisiana lawyers and judges. He was and will remain a giant in the law of Louisiana through his countless contributions in the Treatises and law review articles he wrote. His newsletter was a “must read” to keep up with statutory and jurisprudential changes. Professor Marist had the rare ability to address legal issues scholarly and practically but always with wit and charm and with good humor. He was a magnificent teacher who was beloved by his students.
Chief Justice Weimer commented, “As a former student of his, when I became an attorney, I called upon Professor Maraist’s expertise and experience. When I became a teacher, I tried to emulate him. When I became a judge, he continued to encourage and promote my career. I am proud to say he became not only a mentor but a very dear friend.”
Justice Scott J. Crichton, who serves as chair of the Louisiana Judicial College Board of Governors added, “Professor Maraist, a pioneer in judicial education as an early leader of the Louisiana Judicial College and an exceptional Professor of Law at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, led an exemplary life of scholarship, service and grace. Those who knew him and learned from him - lawyers, judges, and students alike – are grateful for his enormous contributions and tireless commitment to the legal community in Louisiana. He will be dearly missed.”

Very first class I attended fall semester, freshman year. The whole law school experience was intimidating at that point in time, but I came to enjoy his class.
RIP

Losing legends left and right. Bill Crawford, Paul Baier, Cheney Joseph and now Frank “that dog won’t hunt” Maraist. All humble men (except Baier) who accomplished so much and made lasting impacts on generations of lawyers.

He used to clean up with his quarterly law update newsletter. The number of $150 annual subscriptions was dumbfounding.
I walked into his office as a freshman and tried to volunteer to work for him on the newsletter. He didn’t want volunteers. He did everything himself. Great professor.

Had him twice. First time on the last day of class he said,”Wherever you may go in life, let it always be your goal, keep your eye upon the doughnut, not upon the hole.” Second class, on the last day he said, “If toward the close of the trial, if it becomes painfully obvious that someone sitting at your table is going to jail, make sure it’s the client!”
Very kind, brilliant man.

My most embarrassing and most triumphant moments from school were in his class.

Damn, back in the day, I got the silver paddle from his admiralty class. Pour one out for Prof. Maraist.

He subbed in for one of my classes. Found myself wishing I had been in his section. RIP Frank, and thanks for the torts treatise.

I am a bit surprised to see he was still alive and kicking.
IRREGARLESS, as we say in South Louisiana... IRREGARDLESS, RIP Prof. Maraist.
ETA: RIP Baier too. Enjoy your time with Rehnquist.

had him twice. he actually helped me get a job. I was turning in a paper and he asked about my job prospects. i told him i had just interviewed but had not heard back. He said, "I can fix that". When i walked in my apt. the phone was ringing w/ the offer.
favorite line in procedure: you can call it holiday inn or campanile, but what is it?
I liked him a lot. He was normal.

Are y’all runnin’ wit me?
As a person with a similar accent, I was asked to translate by my New Orleans friends who had a hard time understanding when he spoke so fast.

I got the wife pregnant with twins the summer before 1L, so we had twins around finals. I went around and talked to all the professors and asked if I could take a week off (twins were in ICU, ok but in ICU and wife still in hospital).
He was genuinely concerned and I had to report with updates. Good man.

After having Crawford for I, having Frank for II was a bit of a shock.
