02 Grad and I might get a letter in the mail from the Alumni Association ever other year it seems. I went to the Alumni Association website the other day and saw that for a small donation they would send you a replica "Win!" bar - thought it would look good on the door from my patio so I donated. If I had not gone to the website I wouldn't have known about that.

We could start another thread to discuss the entire concept of donations to any school. We pay tuition in return for an education in a straightforward transaction. Why are we pressured to send a gratuity afterward?
At Emory, there was a lot of very public pressure on the class (EMBA) to "beat" the support level pledged in year one by the class prior to ours to a point where the pledge reached well into 6 figures for a class of less than 30. Within a few months of graduation the pledge forms came in the mail to collect and the amount was already filled in.
I'd be interested in the board's thoughts:
Did you feel an obligation to support your school after graduation? Why?

I don't make the kind of money to be donating to my alma mater. House, student loans, growing family all take priority over LSU's endowment fund. So do charitable donations we make, which I would like to be higher before I would even think about donating to LSU.

It's not the winning or losing, it's how embarrassingly bad the situation was handled. Besides, my money, I do with it as I please, and presently I'm not pleased.

For starters, tuition is only one component of the revenue stream for a university.

Yes, because my education was partially underwritten by donors that I received scholarship(s) from, learned from teachers who received professorships made possible by donors, and sat in classrooms & labs that were top-notch thanks to donors.
Consider it my part in "paying it forward" as others did for me.
