I think Stanford's endowment is like 20 billion or something crazy.
Michigan's is pretty up there too with 9 billion or so.

I'd like to know what all of these schools are going to do when all of that old money dries up. Especially LSU

Many of us are not actively against state funding. We just live in a reality that there isn't a money tree and the budget should be balanced. So cut something and spend more on LSU. I am fine with that.

I'll never understand why people are fascinated by giving money back to a school. You paid for the service and now the transaction is done.

Not speaking for everyone but the idea is you want the institution to be doing well presently so that your degree from that institution looks even better.

That. Plus many people give to education to ensure the future success of our country. There's a lot of people out there that believe in a strong, educated workforce results in a strong economic outlook.

More a comparison between how one school's attempts at collecting donations that I have experience with is greatly superior to anything I've received, or more damaging, not received from LSU.

The smaller, liberal-arts schools can do this so well because the perception of an elite school is needed to all but guarantee future success. Combined with a more closely-knit alumni base and you see increased giving.

Here is why, and I'm sure others can relate.
I graduated in 2008. Since then, the Athletic Foundation has contacted me to donate every single year and I have, never mind that it wasn't a bunch of money.
LSU itself on the other hand has never contacted me to donate. Several of my colleagues who went to various schools across the country claim they get contacted several times a year.
I think the problem is rests largely with LSU itself and not the alumni.

Donating to LSU does help preserve and improve the value of your degree through public perception and college rankings. The popular U.S. News and World Report rankings, for instance, include a metric for how many alumni donate - not how much. In other words, 100 alumni donating $1 each helps the school's ranking more than one alumnus donating $100.
If you care at all about LSU, its public perception, its future, its importance to Louisiana and our ability to attract top students, faculty and staff, then please, please donate at least $1 to our university. And to make it easy for you, here's the link:

Secondly, what I think a lot of people forget is how the generosity and forethought of those who came before us not only paved the way but also made our education at LSU possible. I do not know the statistics/numbers for LSU (perhaps a communications issue?) but for a general, ballpark comparison, look at The University of Texas at Austin: UT Austin has a significantly larger endowment than LSU. And, if UT Austin survived on tuition dollars alone, it would shut down the first week of November every year.
So, from that angle, it seems like we can either talk about how we drastically change public funding for our state's flagship or we need alumni to step up to the plate and donate to the university apart from TAF.

I get calls basically weekly from aTm, even Sunday evenings. I need my money more than they do. How the hell else am I supposed to go fishing in Cabo twice in 6 months??
