dumb question but couldnt you just light it with a bbq pit lighter?

Probably not. The gas valve is most likely an electronically operated solenoid.

I tried telling my brother that yesterday but it was like talking to a brick wall. Then he retorted that he has a gas fireplace. I told him the starter is electric. Again, brand new information to him.

Maybe a dumbass question, but if the pilot is already on on the fireplace, shouldn't they be fine?

You are a piece of work a-hole........

You're responding to my post that said the following
quote:

Well look, to be fair I work from home so I don't have to deal with the roads and my wife is a teacher so she'll obviously be working from home also if this happens. So while I say I want this to happen, it's from a selfish perspective because I won't be directly impacted. I realize this will be a hell of a clusterfrick for most.

So do tell me, dickhead, what about that post makes it seem like I want people to suffer? I literally said that I understand it will be a clusterfrick for most who have to drive in it. Never, ever, have I said - or alluded to- that I want people to suffer. Are you that incapable of comprehending what you read or do you just read things then make shite up as you go to fit whatever fricked up narrative you have inside your trailer-dwelling head? I don't know what kind of person you are in real life but you're a terrible poster.

It depends on what kind of gas fireplace you have. If it's a real fireplace that uses gas to start it, then yes. One of those fake gas log fireplace heaters? Nah, you're gonna be cold without a generator.

Some older water heaters have a 100% pilot and you'll still get hot water even if the power goes out.

A gas fireplace can usually be lit with a lighter.

Yes.

We have a gas fireplace and our power went out when we goy 6" of snow last month...no issues with the fireplace.

Those are for show anyways...they dont put out enough heat to heat a house. You're lucky to get 5,000 BTU's from one of those fake fireplaces

The GFS and Euro are starting to come toward each other. Mostly rain, some ice and snow for a lot of southern Louisiana. Would shut down BR for a couple of days, but wouldn't likely be enough ice to cause power outages per 12z Euro solution.

The models are all locked into a similar idea at this point, just a matter of the detail of where the cold air is.

The arctic air is blocked by ridging on all sides, so it'll be in place for a good week or so just ebbing back and forth. The Pacific should be busy with disturbances that'll blow into the Rockies and then ride around the cold air mass and create conditions for multiple rounds of winter storms/just storms for more SE locations in the east for the next week at least.

The Monday night system has all of the makings of a potent storm. Negative tilting trough, right entrance of an increasing jet streak, one hell of a temperature gradient at the surface, and a ton of moisture to lift over very cold air.

Wish the cold question was easier to answer but as we get closer to go time, the NAM and the HRRR can be useful in sniffing out if the shallow cold is going to advance faster than the globals anticipated.
