With the high river and the rain coming from the storm, happen before there where levees in louisiana?

Did the river just flood for miles and miles before? Or is it just the environment changing and making things worse?

Water behaved differently then, it was before the Manhattan Project had removed all the heavy water from off the water table.

It was a different time, you understand?

Yes every low lying area that people lived in from Henderson to Slidell and everywhere in between just flooded if only slightly every spring.

It flooded, and flooded badly. This is not a climate change thing. This is a we’ve tried to control nature and nature is undefeated thing

Natural levees formed. Like “the hill” that the LSU band marches down

Catfish town in BR was called that bc it flooded in downtown, so lots of catfish in the streets

Go on Google Maps satellite view. Wherever you see farmland along the r8ver is where the water went. Wherever you see green swamp( cypress trees), that’s where the water went. All those swamps between the river and Bayou Lafourche all the way to the Atchafalaya were flood plains for the river to drain to the a Gulf.

Ever drive down Highland Road on notice all the backyards on the river side of Highland have a steep drop off?

Highland Road was the natural levee every spring when the Mississippi River would flood.

The Highland Road and Tiger Stadium hill ridge is remnant of an Ice Age event, referred to as the Prairie Plateau. Not a natural levee, though it may have acted as such during riparian flooding. (I knew that Geology elective that I took as an undergrad would come in handy one day!)

It flooded up to the Highland ridge for sure. That area below it is all mostly flat for a reason. Indian mound at LSU was there for a reason. The ridge runs from who knows where all down Highland Rd. Hence the name for that road.

Read Rising Tide by John Berry, a fascinating account of the Mississippi River flood of 1927.
