Why not? We've had numerous "pandemics" over the last several deceased and NEVER shut down the country, or focused THIS much attention on said illnesses. Since at least 2016, we've had constant "existential crises" for the last 4 years. In case you haven't been paying attention, portions of cities have, and are currently being destroyed because of the "crisis" of police brutality against black people. Never mind the fact that the impetus for the current wave of protests was an EXCEEDINGLY rare event...an unarmed black man being killed by police.

The mainstream media exists solely to create division. The 6:00 national news report and reality are two completely different pictures. Then you amplify that division through the power of social media. So after 4 years of daily "existential crises" do you really believe those will just stop after Trump is elected?

The flu kills thousands of people every year. And I would be willing to bet that if we tested for it with the same vigor as we have for cornovirus we'd find the instance of positive tests would DWARF covid. So if "one death is too many" for covid, then why shouldn't the same logic apply to the flu? If despite the fact the positive rate and death rates pertaining to covid are minuscule relative to the US population we still shut down things out of an abundance of caution, then why shouldn't the same logic apply to the flu? Football can't be played (at least according to the Big 10) due to the risk of mayocarditis associated with covid. Well, that same risk has LONG been associated with influenza as well. If we apply the same logic to the flu as we are to covid, then don't we also have to shut everything down during flu season?

So the question is if the "logic" underlying the measures pertaining to covid are "warranted", then why won't that same logic apply to the flu? Or is it simply that the number of deaths we are willing to tolerate from the flu is greater than that we are willing to tolerate from covid? Because BOTH will continue to cause death.
