I can not wait to read some of the responses...

I have 4 kids...my third(7 yo) loves sports and is really pretty good at anything he plays. I have coached my sons in the majority of sports they play and have always been a big believer that multiple rec sports are more beneficial for the kids than 1 sport travel ball...well he has been asked to play on a travel ball team and I am now conflicted.
Any of my other kids I would say no in a heartbeat, just average kids in sports and play for fun. This one is in game day clothes before he walks out of his room in the morning ready to watch or play something athletic.
I always figured that I would keep my kids in rec till high school and then if they made a team great for them. I would rather them play a few sports than focus all of their time on 1.
We also are a family of 6 and big on family support and involvement, dragging the whole family around the state each weekend seems as though it is degrading the family dynamic we are trying to establish.

Have parents noticed that kids in travel ball tend to have a much better chance at playing in high school than kids who have the skills but only grew up through rec league

If your kid can't make the high school team then he is no good.

Don't worry, they just want your money.

Most independent coaches will tell you that rec ball thru 12u is fine. For travel ball, the key is the coaches. If you don't get into a daddy ball coaching situation, that is best. The higher end travel teams have paid coaches, not dads. 'Travel ball' in general is just league ball these days. You have to sift through the shite, but yes, travel ball is much more developmental than rec/league.

7 year old travel ball should be illegal.

7 is way too young for travel ball. His body is still developing and a lot of changes are coming. I waited until my son was 11, and even then I was reluctant. He played travel ball from then on, but not always both spring and fall. What I've found is that if the kid has talent, he'll thrive in any environment, but there did become a time where rec ball was just so watered down with kids who shouldn't have been paying baseball, it just wasn't a fun experience.

My son just graduated and he gained enough from travel ball that he started on HS varsity team his Jr and Sr years and will be going to play JUCO at a college in Ga. However, he didn't do near as much travel ball as some of his friends who burned out or who just didn't have the talent to make it at the HS level or beyond. IMO, natural skill and talent trumps travel ball.

No. Seriously don't worry about it. I mean, if your kid really loves baseball and wants to play fall ball or in a summer league when he gets a little older (like 6th or 7th grade), go for it.

But to think that not starting travel ball at age 7 will be detrimental to his chances of making the HS team is paranoia.

Travel ball completion is for sure better, but for the best experience you want to find a good situation because travel ball teams vary so much.

The team I played on actually was originally a rec-ball all-star team. But we were so good that we decided to turn it into a travel ball team. It worked out because all the parents knew each other and were from the same area and the dads coached the team.

Some teams are nuts with paid coaches and intense parents who take he whole hint way too seriously.

My son's HS team's roster last year 1 kid did not play travel ball. Did not play much. No starters did not play.

travel for coach pitch is insane

and playing year round is foolish... very very few kids actually do that...

There are very very few places left where league ball will prepare them for HS.... but the travel coaches need to be good... ie.. they teach fundamentals and multiple positions and base running.... not just screaming base running instructions but actually teaching it.

looking at the all state teams... littered with kids we knew from travel ball....

Travel ball is great if you (the parent) are not retarded. We do in- state tournies a couple weekends a month for a few moths in the spring/ summer. 8-9 tournies. It's good competition and the kids reall like it. The stories of the travel ball nazi people are certainly true but not everybody is like that. It can be an good/enjoyable experience if you're normal.

Stick with the rec league for a while longer.

My son and two of his friends made the his high school baseball team over others that played travel ball. He was in it for the fun and tried the travel ball one summer and hated it.

travel ball at 7 is too young....wait until he is in MS...my oldest plays travel ball more than I would like (he lives full time with Mom)...but this weekend he is playing at Mercer...next weekend U of A in Tuscaloosa, in a few weeks..UGA...has already played at Furman this summer.....he is 16...and has been doing school and travel since 6th grade. It does give more exposure when they are older as scouts tend to go to these college expos in the summer vice traveling to all the little hick HS's around the state to find talent.

but not for 7 year olds.
