LOL. Maybe there is money being made by some with sponsors and what not, but I can guarantee you the vast majority are barely paying their bills. Many are sponsored by the counties, parish, town, etc. to bring in visitors.

I don't want to have kids because I don't want to spend every summer weekend watching twelve year olds play baseball in Huntsville, AL.

We're heading up your way for a soccer tournament this weekend. Staying in Clinton. Last weekend was Lafayette, weekend after this is Mobile. At least travel baseball is more densely filled with teams. In travel (club) soccer we really have to travel. Our club is MS coast based.

Ours are Juniors in HS and both played Travel Ball since age 9.
Son #2 just Committed to Mississippi State over the weekend. Full ride too (Books, Tuition, Housing and meals).

Congrats, how many of his travel ball teammates are also on a full ride?

Out of the 15 currently on the team? Only 2 and they are pitchers. I *think* 3-4 others have offers but haven't decided yet. The remaining players will end up signing somewhere and will get some schollie money.

If your son is the pitcher listed below that is 6'4 and throws 90, how did travel ball help that? Your argument is absurd if so.

I could make just as many arguments for serious travel ball to be detrimental for pitchers as it is beneficial. Hitting and fielding certainly the more reps the better, but for most kids a lengthy travel ball schedule is not good for their arms pitching wise. Proper coaching and sound fundamentals as well as natural size is really what pitchers need to develop.

I'm a HS coach and deal with "travel ball" issues all the time.
Sure travel ball kids know the game better... they also are much more likely to have repetitive use issues especially with rotator cuff and tommy john type stuff. There is also a higher incidence of player burnout for kids that didn't want to play quite as bad as mom and dad want them to play.
I don't think its awful but I can tell you that my two daughters will NOT play travel ball unless I think they have a chance to be an elite player and THEY beg to play. It's not something I would ever push on a kid.

We didn't go however some of our players merged with another group of kids and went.

Right know our sons are doing showcase tournaments. Our last tournament is in Ft. Meyers Fl. in October.

It's not so much the lenght of the schedule, but the number of pitches and number of days rest. Also doing recovery work after pitching and properly stretching and warming up before pitching. Pretty much all your REC coaches are clueless and they're the ones usually causing damage to a kids arm. IMO, this is just 1 of many things that make travel baseball more appealing.

It's been my experience the ones with arm issues are the ones who were over used by inexperienced and uneducated baseball coaches who are clueless and have no idea how to properly instruct players on the importance of arm care.

Nah. In the younger years the kids would fundraise plus only the major tournaments (state, nationals, world series, etcc) required overnight stays. So probably spent 10k over the past 7 years with the last 2 years being the most expensive due to showcase games.

Athletic money and Academic money.

D1 has 11.5 scholarships to give out so that's why scholarships are divied up and why high ACT and GPA are so important.
