Oh, and my son wants to play in purple and gold. We've been in touch with Nolan Cain and he is going to one of his camps in August.
Nobody cares. You're son and his buddy are the extreme ouliers. 99% of kids won't throw 85 in their life, much less 90 at 15. Having your 10 year old devote his life to something is stupid. Many college coaches are now looking even harder to see if a kid plays other sports. Tom Crean said in an interview I heard recently that when he recruits kids the last coach he talks to is the basketball coach. He wants to see how a kid handles not being the stud. It's easy when you are the dude, but how does somebody react when they are a regular player.
Point being, if you are telling the truth about your son, they are the exception to the rule. Even if he is that good it is still a good thing to get him into an uncoftable environment.

I love the OT.
Also, my 4 year old hit 330 foot home run in a t-ball game last weekend. And we force him to use a wood bat.

Have parents noticed that kids in travel ball tend to have a much better chance at playing in high school than kids who have the skills but only grew up through rec league
Yep.
Very easy to tell the difference between a REC coached player vs a Travel Ball coached player.... and yes, some REC players can make a HS team. The reason a REC player may make a team is due to the parents are usually great fundraisers. So REC players are usually "selected" based on potential fundraising abilities.

I'm driving an hour tomorrow for two games, then back again Sunday morning.
It's a beating but fun for all involved

Why the condescension? He plays football as well and certainly is not the stud on that team. He's a good kid and very respectful. He is humble and makes good grades. What more could I ask of him?
Nobody cares? Damn this site is full of angry people.

I'll never understand why playing high school baseball is so damn important to people. Is it really totally worth focusing your childhood on to one day maybe playing high school?
Posted on 6/9/17 at 3:59 pm to mandevilletiger34
I don't have kids yet, but they damn sure aren't going to play travel ball bullshite. That is a waste of time and money. Your kid isn't going pro, and isn't getting a college scholarship to a school worth a shite, don't waste the time/effort/money on travel ball.

If a kid gets into baseball and loves it and wants to continue playing as he gets older it's the natural next step. Why not let them have goals?

LoL...you're such a great parent. How do you think any kid makes it to the MLB? They started young and set goals and attained them along the way. Of course they had to have the talent to get there. Your blanket statement is ridiculous. You are basing your opinion of select baseball from the losers on here.

Really.
I know a family that spent thousands on daddy ball growing up and he didn't make the high school team. He became a total failure at life and the mom and dad blame him not making the high school baseball team.

That is a product of having shitty parents. Not an indictment on select baseball.

Choosing a kids "profession" at 8 isn't fair to the kid. A kid shouldn't be doing the same thing 40 weekend a year. That's not fair to a kid who doesn't know any better. Of course he is going to tell his daddy he enjoys it. Who wants to dissapoint their dad at 10 years old?
Then he turns 14 and all they have ever done is baseball, they start to hate it. Unless they are extremely talented when travel ball wouldn't have made a differnence anyway.
No one wants to admit it but travel ball is for the parents more than it is for the kids.

Can you afford it and do you mind the other kids getting a tad resentful? If so, sure.
Just understand, this isn't going to make your kid a major league baseball player.

If not making the high school baseball team ruined a kids life, it wasn't going to be great to begin with.

Play golf with them - you won't be able to watch them play travel baseball with them after they burnout - you can always play golf with them until you die

Mine's a JR in HS and played mostly travel ball. Playing against better talent will either make you or break you. Solid Student, takes AP courses, straight A's, 24 ACT score on his 1st try without prep courses and holds 3 offers from D1 Universities.
So Travel Ball does pay off for some.
eta:
Once you reach HS ball, you'll play "Showcase" baseball, which is the same as travel ball but different. Showcase ball allows each player to showcase their strengths to college coaches in attendance and winning the game is not a priority.

I wouldn't even be thinking about pigeonholing a kid into travel ball at the age of 7. Kids can pick up some great cross-sport skills playing multiple sports at that age up into their teens. It also eases the pressure of your kid feeling obligated to select a specific sport that you're pushing specialization in at that age.
Just let your kid be a kid.

I don't believe in attempting to attain unrealistic goals. I would rather my kids focus on academics, rather than athletics. Academics will benefit a much greater percentage of the population.
