I never understand people who think that local politicians are people to be afraid of. If those people go outside of where they govern, no one knows who they are.
They get away with shite because the people who vote them in allows them. They need to remember the ONLY reason they have the jobs they have is because people voted for them. It wasn't because they were qualified. They didn't really earn it. Its because people went out and voted and the majority of them voted for them.
Of course they know how the game is played and how to secure those votes, etc.. But if someone is scared to voice their opinion about local politicians then thats a problem.

I remember in high school hearing something about how there was a place in Livingston Parish with devil worshippers..

I remember about thirteen years ago the locals here in LP were concerned about the Wiccans opening up a shop on Florida Blvd. I forgot how they did it but the Wiccans aren't around any longer.
