Teachers "teach" Monday through Friday during school hours. Then, they spend the evenings, and yes, even weekends, "working"..... grading, building lessons, communicating with parents, and running school clubs, sports, etc.

Some, especially coaches, put in tons of hours. But don’t fool yourself. There are plenty of teachers that do the absolute bare minimum.

Denham High just got new a brand new football stadium, boys baseball and girls softball fields and they are nice. REALLY NICE.

That looks like a pretty foolish use of the school board’s political capital, in hindsight.

The situation is this; a single parent (teacher) with 2 kids in LP, cannot afford to LIVE in the parish in which they teach. Don't you think that's a bit silly?

So it’s a cost of living problem.

Ok then, let’s delve into this.

Why is their cost of living so high?

Are they the only ones facing these increasingly higher living costs?

They can if you consider their salary, child support, numerous tax credits/benefits, and potentially alimony.

On the other hand the professionals that teach their kids make "too much".

A "professional" means something more than just someowho works in a profession.

A professional is at the top of their craft, takes absolute pride in their work and someone who is above reproach.

Teachers are employees just like most people. Quit acting like they're special.

The baseball and softball fields were way overdue. The school didnt even have them. Also most of the school district's revenue comes from Denham, but Denham had the worst facilities of the 3 big schools.

Yes that sales tax is very high. Thankfully for single parents with 2 kids the sales tax was not increased.

Hopefully the single mom with two kids will have good teachers for her kids next year.

Yes. Based on this week Livingston does appear to have some teachers that do need to be doing something else, but these particular ones are likely incapable of getting offers to go elsewhere.

Hopefully they and Superintendent Joe get dismissed by end of school year.

So should be clearing 4k a month.

Ummmm. You're working in gross numbers. You think a teacher actually "clears" 4k a month? LOL

Dude, did teachers suddenly not have to pay taxes themselves in your world?

What about that wonderful pension they receive? You think it funds itself? Nah, bruh; they put 10% of their gross pay into that thing every month.

A teacher, making 48k/year, after all is said, done and paid, takes home approximately 2500/month.

The apartment I rented on Buddy Ellis Road while building my house was $1300/month (2 bedroom). $1200/month left over in that budget.....

Then, after 30 years of dedicated service, the teacher finally gets to retire with another whopping 2700/month after taxes. Wow. I'm jealous.

Not true. An LP teacher posted this week and was complaining bc is she retries now after 26yrs here pension would only be over $4k/mth.

After 30yrs it is definitely much higher. Unlike those with 401ks that are down a lot, teachers still draw their full pension regardless that it is unsustainable.

It’s not unsustainable. Teachers themselves put in 8% of their earnings and the employers have been putting around 26% of the teacher’s salary each year. A 50k a year teacher costs a school system over 80k, this is one reason the retirement is sustainable.

Was Jamarcus Russell a professional?

Maybe it's time to change your lofty definition to "A professional is someone who gets paid for it."

Might want to do some reading

The Advocate (just hit reader mode)

TRSL

Fee.org

Louisiana is no different than every other state with pensions for teachers: they’re all massively underfunded and thus unsustainable.

The 26% I mentioned in funding from the employer included the UAL payments. So, with those contributions it is sustainable. Which makes sense, your basically saving 1/3 of each teacher’s salary, investing it, and in some cases never paying out all the contributions to retirees.

Because of sales tax collected by the rest of the parish shopping there secondary to the lack of retail stores outside of Denham

TRSL's UAL will be paid off by the end of the decade.

That’s simply inaccurate…. With 26 years of service, a teacher would retire with 65% of the average of their highest 3 earning years.
