Well I vote live on the ranch but haven't been to that area and with the border security issue I could see the pause.

Sounds like the poor man’s version of Yellowstone. I like it. I’d do it and never look back, especially with things they way they are in this country now.

If you still had that ranch would you live in Freer, or would you avoid any of those nearby towns completely and just live an hour or so away.

I am from Des Allemands and I have been living on a small ranch I purchased in George West. It’s not a bad living if you get your place set up right.

I have lived in various a\small towns most of my life, and some were far from a large city. Let me warn you that small town politics/social structure are very fickle….either you are with the “in” crowd or you are an outcast….there typically is no in between.

If you choose to do that, I suggest you do it while your grandfather is still around to ease the transition.

I think the Mrs and I will spend more time at the ranch as we get older, but couldn’t ever see myself living out there. This is in the Wingate area but I don’t think I want to be that far from good medical. I’m pretty sure home base will always be houston but I would like to get out there more than we do. We were basically 50/50 during peak covid and that was nice.

Nice, you aren’t far from the town my grandpa lives in. I almost got a job in George west a couple years ago. I could potentially live around there be close to the ranch

I could also live on the ranch I guess.

Who lives there now? Anyone? Is there a house?

If you want to live on the ranch, live on the ranch.

You've lost your mind on this. You have no control over your neighbors in the suburbs or how your neighborhood eventually goes. Your street could end up becoming a major thoroughfare. The ranch in the middle of nowhere with family is the way to go.

A real gem in that area of texas is Falfurris. ?They make a lot butter.

But more important, this time of year at a night high school football game you will see more flying roaches than an Indiana Jones insect scene

My family owns a big ranch in south Texas not too far from the border. People that have hunted in south Texas have probably heard of the town (I'm not going to post it to avoid doxing myself). The town is pretty much only known for hunting. My family actually donated around half of the land a couple generations ago to make it bigger, it used to be part of the family ranch.
Lemme guess... Falfurrias. Home of the world's smallest walmart where old man Walton would get his shotgun shells and jerky when he came down to hunt.

And to answer your question- you'd be crazy to pass up the opportunity. You'd be crazy before LBJ's electrification in TX and Amazon... but with full utilities and Amazon you'd be insane not to do it.

Don't do it...
Saltwater fishing / Crabbing / Shrimping is a Thousand miles away.
No Beachside Bars , Girls in Bikinis, Jimmy Buffet was killed near there.
I'd visit often but no way I'm living among the Cayotes and cactus all my life...
