Wonder if the lifeguard was freaking out that so many others were wading out in that to come help. Looks like he told the first guy to get back to shore. Like he needs 8 other people that need rescuing.

I wonder what the net thing was around the kid. The lifeguards were amazing. I know those people want to help, as would I, but you have to listen to the professionals in that situation. Stand back and help when they ask.

Exactly. First big wave he leans back into it like it looks like he was trained to do. Second wave he’s got another guy pulling on him so he can’t lean into it. By the third wave he is able to lean back into it again.

I live nearby and occasionally enjoy going surfing and body boarding, a few months ago on a much calmer day than this I ended up dragging a drowning middle aged and out of shape man about 15 feet back to shore in knee/waist deep water. By the time I reached him, only a few minutes after I first spotted him going in, he was passed out with white fluid coming out of his nose and mouth.
Luckily we had cell service at this beach and were able to contact the fire department who responded quickly and after clearing his lungs and getting him some oxygen he recovered. The break had flattened so almost every other surfer was gone and I only remained in the water because my daughter wanted to play for a few more minutes, if we weren't still there he likely wouldn't have made it. It shocked me that even though he was there with a family of 10+ people they did nothing to help other than to scream at me to do something...
People constantly go into the ocean who don't know how to swim and have absolutely no sense of how cold the water is and how it will effect them. Deaths at the beaches in Northern CA are not at all uncommon since most either do not have any lifeguards, only have them seasonally, or a few lifeguards are responsible for patrolling huge stretches of beach.
