I like to let the oil fully coat the internals before taking off. Yeah, it'll build pressure, but the shite needs to be pushed everywhere. Also, the beast needs to calm down before I move. It's always like 500rpm higher than normal right after I start it. Can't be peeling out in front of my house.
I typically hit the auto-start a few minutes before to cool it off during the summer, and warm it up in the winter.

Depends on the temperature, I give a little time when it's near or below freezing to make sure the lifters and/or lash adjusters are getting oil. I have aftermarket oil pressure gauges in my trucks though so I know what the actual oil pressure is rather than a dummy light/gauge. Vehicles with oil pressure based camshaft phasers should definitely be given a few seconds at least with a cold start.

I think a lot of things like this are vestiges of old cars where manufacturing standards were much lower than they are today. I've never seen anything about waiting to drive on a modern car.

probably just older, more than likely whatever car they learned to drive in, it was prudent to do that to ease the load on the battery for the next start

As many on here have already stated.. letting your car idle (as in not revving your engine..) on start up for 15 to 20 seconds is allowing your motor oil, most of which has settled in the oil pan at the bottom of your engine, to circulate through your motor... This is part of the advantage of "lighter" oils ( 5W20 oil (flows better/quicker at cooler temps) vs a 10W40 oil)
I read somewhere that 90% of your engine wear occurs in the 1st 30 seconds of start up... allowing your car time on start up to circulate the oil reduces that somewhat...

I have a 2018 car with turbo and I can hear the difference of the car kinda settling down after about 20 secs. Just started it.

Not all of the oil is going to drain out of the engine. It's a matter of seconds before additional oil is pumped through though.
