One of my grandparents grew up polish. Her shtetl became Russia. She and her older sister got out as teenagers. Canada. Their older brothers stayed. Were not heard from after a time. So it goes.

The Muslim invasion angle on Western Europe is one of the most overblown things on Tigerdroppings. Not one European country has more than 10 percent Muslim population based on immigration.

The most "Muslim" countries in Europe are all in the East. Kosovo, Albania, and Bosnia are over 50 percent. Macedonia is around 35 percent, and Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Montenegro, and Russia are all 10-20 percent. Now none of those are from immigration from Pakistan or the MENA regions, but the point still stands.

I would say that they have a point, and that Mitteleuropa as an entity is far older and culturally stronger than post-WWII boundaries and norms. Budapest was/is considered one of the great central European cities for centuries right there with Vienna, Prague, Venice, Munich, etc. The historical Hungarian ties with northern Italy, Austria, southern Germany, Croatia, Czechia, and so forth are much stronger than they are with many of the regions that would probably be historically considered classically eastern European.

The massive population shifts during and post-WWII and the fact that the USSR subsequently dropped a big arse wall in the middle of the continent did a number on the cultural identities of the region, but I think the Hungarians have a legitimate beef with that (as do the Czechs, probably, and to a lesser degree the Slovenes).
