Let's Talk About Biases

We all have them. They can be formed and molded from the smallest interaction in our daily lives, to a experience so provoking that it loves with us forced. Biases are inherent and something we all live through. Our job, as individuals, is to understand a feeling that we have and try evolve that feeling into something good that not only benefits us, but others as well. The key to a better living is the betterment of not only ourselves, but also those around us. The willingness to be open to contrarian thought leads to discourse that brings about understanding. With understanding comes growth.

You sure you want to talk with anyone? This seems more like a lecture or a statement....although I'll bite with this one.
The best thing we can do for society in a capitalist system is to look after our own best interests. We are all trying to get the best job, buy the best product, and send our kids to the best schools. Those actions reward the best performers and forces the worst performers to either reinvent themselves or suffer economic consequences.
Institutional and personal biases based on race, creed, color, or political background undermines all of that and needs to be squashed. We all have them although they aren't always what society considers bad.
Multiple high profile instances of extreme police brutality influences behavior. Violent destruction of property and perceived hatred of a specific group will influence their behavior. That's a consequence of what happened in the US this week.
My frustration now is that the people that routinely claim to want to "start a discussion" frequently aren't actually interested in society as a whole. They want to tell everyone else how things should be - and it's frequently based in politics. It's dishonest. In this case, it obscured a legitimate police brutality and human racism problem with bullshite race politics.

That is not at all why humans develop biases. You develop biases as a result of your experiences. You remember and incorporate those biases into your subconscious for one reason and one reason alone, survival.
If the past week has taught you anything, it should be that a human's return to its base happens much quicker than most people believe.

Everyone has biases, but I think the biggest obstacle is not using those experiences to justify weak inductions based on prior experience. We like to put things in categories, and use those categories to make predictive claims about things where we don't have sufficient ability to gain knowledge. Often times, the cognitive dissonance comes when we experience certain situations which upset these predictive algorithms, as generally, humans aren't able to make caveats to those foundational set of experiences.
I'm fond of the Seneca quote " begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life," which I try to take to heart, and its helped me tremendously, especially overcoming negativity associated with previous experiences.

Biases and prejudice is what allowed us to evolve into what we are today. Being able to look at something and make a snap judgment about whether it is dangerous or not is what allowed us to survive and thrive in a dangerous world. It is built into us.

First thing you need to get into your pointy little head is that, contrary to left-wing dogma, bias is not inherently a bad thing. The second is that there is a hard limit to the benefits of collectivism and that individual biases generally strengthen society as long as certain elements are mature enough to accept them.
