re: Let's not forget that D-Day was simply the beginning...

But totally overrated.
Where the hell do some of you people come from?
Reading comprehension is obviously not your strong suit. Those figures are for the whole Battle of Normandy - which was fought from June 6, 1944 - July 27, 1944. D-Day was merely the first day of that battle yet we only ever talk about THAT day. I feel like June 6 gets way too much attention when you take into account how important the rest of the fighting in Normandy was.

Reasonable post - "As we remember D-Day, let's also remember the weeks that followed and the remainder of the Battle of Normandy. It was only the beginning of a larger and prolonged slog."
Stupid/contrarian post - "D-Day is kind of overrated"

Nice troll attempt.
How many planes, ships, men were involved in taking an invasion force from England, across the English Channel onto France? We don't count the significance of the event by the number of people killed, but by the sheer magnitude of the event. The relative light casualties are just another testament to people involved in this momentous occasion. The Russians could not even imagine putting such an operation in motion.

What kind of revisionist kind of history were you brainwashed into believing?

This is not meant to slight those who went ashore on June 6, 1944.
Sure it is.
I wonder how many of my generation (60's born), much less today's coddled, lazy, self absorbed millennials, would have made that sacrifice for their country. I love my sons, but I can't see them jumping out of a boat and wading to short under relentless machine gun fire.

Congrats on being edgy
Alot People praise D-Day because its simple and they can post a meme or ribbon on facebook. Its unfortunate the other battles that had more loss of life, and honestly the entire Marine contingent in the pacific that pretty much gets ignored by the general public
But his title for this thread isnt great, and will likely cause most people not to even read his well thought out post

His post is accurate and makes sense
It's the dumbass title that shows the intent

You tried to portray d-day as insignificant, yet listed 4-5 reasons as to why it was significant
It was just a shitty attempt at trying to start an edgy thread

Yeah the title sucks, but the post isn't the troll that everyone keeps saying it is.
People form their opinion based on the title and never change it even if they do read the rest.

Dumb take. D-day was a huge deal before Facebook ever became popular

Because the men who are pictured in the photograph below made it so they wouldn't have to. However, I think people underestimate the willpower of the human spirit. If there ever came a day where the world was under threat from a brutal dictator bent on global domination, I have no doubt plenty of American boys (and girls) would answer the call to defend their nation from attack.
Americans are a peace-loving people, and our first inclination is to make peace instead of war. But if we're threatened/attacked, watch out. Just look at our response after the attacks on 9/11. I have no doubt a similar response would occur in 2019 if nearly 3,000 Americans were killed in a single horrific event.

But plenty in every generation would answer the call in a situation like that
You still have kids volunteer to go get blown up in the middle east for pretty much no damn reason.

Saw the title, and the OP. Did not read, and don't care to. Just came to downvote.

This is a perfect example of how a thread that actually has some pertinent points can be completely sunk by a bad title
Had the thread title been
As important as D-Day was; don’t forget it was only the beginning
You wouldn’t get this reaction
