I'm 100% sure this PSA was unnecessary.

I kind of underestimated this.

I actually wanted a legitimate debate, but instead all I got were a bunch of hotheads who can't be bothered to think about a different point of view without insulting me.

Hell, I would venture to say a healthy majority of americans have no clue the pacific battles even happened. They think d-day, beach, saving private ryan, frick hitler, then we dropped bombs over japan

Maybe try coming out of the box a little less hot next time.

I get the feeling that a lot of folks just read the title and downvoted. Good explanation. I agree with you.

The OP's post basically says "he guys, just remember D-day was only the beginning." Anyone that matters knows that.

Yeah, that's known as D-Day+1, D-Day+2, et cetera.

Come back and talk about D-Day+1 tomorrow, professor.

You should have said that the Western Allies role in defeating the Nazis is overstated, as most of the casualties and heavy fighting was on the Eastern Front. That would have started a real debate. /s

Damn. Cant believe I forgot that

Honestly, if you cant tell, I feel pretty butthurt over the slight I feel the 1st Marines get from people over WW2. The airborne and Pattons army get the publicity because the european theatre is sexier because its a white enemy in western culture europe, but man those marines went through hell in back.

Not the word I would use. It’s got an edgy attention grabbing headline that doesn’t really reflect the content.

The content is actually fairly decent which I wouldn’t say is representative of today’s journalism.

And from my ken, using “big words” doesn’t make one sound smart, unless you use them correctly.

Incorrect usage of language makes you sound tedious and pretentious.

Why should I have said something I don't agree with? Sure...the war was ultimately won by the Russians, but that victory wouldn't have been possible if not for Lend-Lease. The United States supplied the Russians with the tools necessary for bringing about that ultimate victory.

I wonder how many of my generation (60's born), much less today's coddled, lazy, self absorbed millennials, would have made that sacrifice for their country. I love my sons, but I can't see them jumping out of a boat and wading to short under relentless machine gun fire.

You shouldn't have raised nancies then.

There are plenty of millennial and younger men in the armed forces today. Plenty who aren't because we live in relatively safe times.

Tons would step up if the need arose just like their grandfathers and great grandfathers did. Just like men did after 9/11.

Some of you act like every male born after 1980 skips around in a dress all day long. Do you people live in caves?

Get the frick out of here.

My grandpa (who passed away in 2010) was in WWII. He was stationed in Italy at the time. At the time he was part of the group who reloaded the bombs on airplanes (forgot what it was called, that's how he explained it).

He didn't say much about the war, but he did say they did get word about the Marines who stormed Omaha beach.

It was emotional for them just to hear about it, because those Marines were landing on the beaches knowing what was waiting for them. Some of them getting shot before they even stepped foot on the beach.

It is symbolic and for good reason. We don't need some dumb frick like you to tell people why you think it is overrated. Like everything you mentioned, honoring D-Day represents all of that, because it followed because of D-Day.

We celebrate Presidents Day. Is that overrated because every president was born on a different day?

Your grand papppy was full of shite

Also, they didnt know what was waiting for them. They thought they would face light fire like the other beaches. The men on Omaha beach met an unfortunate suprise.
