4.9 miles LINK... what the frick is Walmart doing?

This is because WMT has made the smart business decision where they'd rather cannibalize themselves than give up business to another retailer.

The growth of their small format stores helps make this easier (vs. Supercenters). This helps combat what was an issue for WMT for a long time, "fill-in" trips - where shoppers only go to WMT for big trips on the 1st and 15th, then stop in smaller local stores for fill-ins.

Also, how many of you have actually walked into a WMT on multiple occasions and thought "This place is too slow?"

There's often enough business at a single supercenter to spread around

I disagree. There is a Wal-Mart right across the street form his Gonzales store as well and that store stays packed all of the time. The locals, myself included, will support him. I, like others in the area do not grocery shop at Wal-mart. If I need motor oil or some other bullshite item i'll reluctantly go but other than that i'm not grocery shopping at freakin Wally World. So build away, no worries here.

I like options. Wal-Mart sells the exact same thing in every store. I mostly shop at a local owned Big Star. I can ring the buzzer in the meat dept. and one of the butchers will cut a steak or any thing I desire. I can buy a chicken that was alive a few days ago, wasn't frozen, and isn't vacuum sealed in some slime from a meat processing plant. When I check out there is no line and the bag boy will put the groceries in my car. I may pay a little bit more but Ive got options, some better product, and great customer service.

this pretty much sums it up for me. Do I shop at Wallyworld? Sure? If I need shite tickets, paper towels, detergent or any other staple, Walmart is hard to beat. Trouble is, I can't stand shopping there. As a result, I'll gladly hit up Rouses or WD for a better selection and better service. Its worth every penny to me.
And this is how Leblanc's or any other store can compete.

People LOVE capitalism until they actually have to deal with it. Too bad. Whole Foods or Trader Joes would survive.

frick Harvest, I drive out of my way to go to LeBlancs. Don't like getting meat from Wal-Mark anyways. But I do see where it would be even more of a traffic cluster frick.

There's a zoning change proposal going on in Thibodaux to put a Wal-Mart Market at the corner of Percy Brown Road and LA1.

I'm all about convenience and capitalism. The Racetrack by Sammy's and the Walmart gas pumps will be great for Pizza boys in that area.

I still like the smaller stores for getting booze, a hot meal from the deli area, or for flowers/cards/etc.

I wouldn't underestimate the local shops.

There's a supercenter across the street from the old LeBlanc's on Airline in Gonzales and another one across 190 from the Hammond LeBlanc's location.

They seem to be doing just fine...as do the Hi Neighbor on Jones Creek just down from the Coursey Neighborhood Market. The Rouses in Covington next door to the Supercenter is still kicking. Reeves in Baton Rouge is just down the street from that Neighborhood market on Old Hammond, and it's still around.

If Randy LeBlanc wanted to minimize chances of direct competition, he should have purchased that other lot years ago when he developed his store. On the other hand, they are basically changing the zoning rules so this Wal Mart can open up there.

I don't like shopping at Wal Mart, but I don't see them as the big evil boogey man at least as far as grocery is concerned. Local grocers and specialty grocers seem to know how to compete with them.

I want my money to go as far as possible. So I shop where the best prices are.

quote:

A lot of those mom and pops around the country are serviced by a much larger co-op. They aren't as defenseless as they seem.

And this. Especially this. Very few, and I mean very few "Mom and Pop" stores do not belong to a larger co-op distributorship. They can compete if they want to, but of course are going to give you the sob story.

Everybody loves to hate on Walmart, many people are misinformed, especially the "buy local" people. Chances are Walmart employs more local people than anyone. The Neighborhood Markets are big into buying local produce and products and probably purchase more from local vendors than your "mom and pops" do. They push that pretty big in those stores. Most Walmarts also come with infrastructure improvements to both utilities and transportation surrounding them. The local governments wont get that out of a Mom and Pop store.

And no I don't work for Walmart, but I have built a couple and see what goes into getting them into a community on the front end. Your local politicians are needy, needy people.

They can and will compete.

In this case, LeBlanc's distribution and support center is Associated Grocer's hub just over in Baton Rouge. IGA services a bunch of stores locally too. Same concept really.

Against the big box chains, independent grocers have done much better than independent hardware, books, or sporting goods stores.

I'm between jobs right now and we have had to tighten our belts significantly.

My wife used to do all the grocery shopping, with the majority of it being at Wal Mart. Due to taking a baby and younger kids to the store, she started trying some smaller stores and found that she could actually save money in some cases.

When we got serious about saving money, I took over most of the shopping because I have the patience to read adverts and figure out which store will truly save the most.

Long story short, local stores have a better selection of generics than Wal-Mart does any longer. Lots of examples I could list where an AG or IGA store can save you money if you're willing to buy off brand. Wal-mart is cheaper on name brand, plus they will price match name brands.

So, if you only buy name brand, Wal-mart saves you some $. But even on name brands, catch Winn Dixie, Publix, Kroger etc running good sales and you will be close to Wal Mart, plus you save time and get better service. And Winn Dixie runs meat specials that can't be beat. A lot of times, any money you might save on other staples, is trumped by how much you can save on sales priced meats at Winn Dixie.

Bottom Line, I've learned NOT shopping at Wal-Mart saves us time and money.

Walmart will easily save you at least $10-$20 on $100 trip if you buy the Great Value stuff.

So buy a shite product and you save money? Great advice.

There are a few things that value brands are equal on, but anything that isn't a basic food (sugar, flour, etc) has a noticeable drop off.

Randy Leblanc had no problem kicking the grocery store at Drusilla Lane out of their place. Hmmn

Aldi does. Also, Walmart is typically all that much cheaper than other major chains.
