Leaving job without notice.

Buddy of mine has been offered a job and can only give his current employer 2 days notice. He doesn't want to burn any bridges with his current employer but can't push back his start date. What advice do y'all have for him?

Better hope he never needs that job again.

Tell your buddy he is a piece of shite

If it's an opportunity he can't pass up, he should take it. He should also be very frank with the current employer.

Well his only option is to give a two day notice
Or just vanish without a word

Always lock the door when you're jerking off. Avoid the awkward "What are you doing daddy?" conversation with your 5 year old.

Tell ex employer about the time constraint with new employer. Apologize for short notice. Move on.

Tell HR at his current job that he was raped in the office by someone who looks just like his boss, but couldn't be sure.

That bridge will be burned.

Random question. Is it acceptable to give a months' notice then take a bunch of vacation days and then only half arse it when you actually do go in to work?

Tell him to give the current employer a two week notice and when they say "Sorry to see you go, but we appreciate the 2 weeks notice" tell him to then submit a Vacation request form for the next 2 weeks.

If he really doesn't want to burn that bridge has a possibility of going back then he doesn't take the offer. Pretty shitty for the new employer to not give him 2 weeks. Says a lot about their company really, makes you wonder if it is worth it.

I mean you gotta do what you gotta do. I'd just tell the current employer the truth.

Just tell him to tell his old company what the deal is and move on.

He's gotta look out for him.
It's not ideal to give less than 2 weeks notice, but he has to do what he has to do.

Is the new job in the same region?
If everything can't properly be transitioned in two days, you can have your buddy offer to come back into the office on the next couple of weekends (or after hours of his new job) to finish transitioning.
The answer will obviously be "No" but it would be a nice gesture that he cares.
He should also insist that he will be accessible still by cell and email if there any questions.

Just do it. It's not optimal, but I wouldn't let a common courtesy ruin an opportunity, assuming it's a better job or something he really wants.
Even the best companies out there fire people with no notice on a Friday afternoon. Never put an employer above yourself in the grand scheme. And this is coming from someone with a fantastic employer, and someone who has gotten screwed by a short notice resignation.
