The goal is to leave on good terms so you can use them as a reference.

That is a fear tactic.

I always used coworkers as references and got great reviews.

I never had a problem getting a job.

Just be upfront about it and don't be a dick... Stay in touch with people he currently works with so he can keep a live line with the old job just in case.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. It's not like his employer would give him 2 weeks notice he was gonna be fired/laidoff. All's fair in love and war, and trust me, employers are always at war (with each other, themselves, and their employees).

Tell your friend to do what he thinks is in HIS best interests and not anyone else's.

If it is a better job than take it. Explain the situation to the current employer and let the chips fall where they may.

I really doubt that your buddy literally only had two days between the time that he knew he would take this new job and the drop dead date to start...sounds like your buddy is a procrastinator.

and yes, it is shitty to leave a job without notice...better hope the grass is as green over the fence as it looks.

No decent company would EVER do that......... If that company makes him leave without a notice, they can expect all of their employees to drop them the same way. And I would hope that would happen.

Is the new job in the same region?

If everything can't properly be transitioned in two days, you can have your buddy offer to come back into the office on the next couple of weekends (or after hours of his new job) to finish transitioning.

The answer will obviously be "No" but it would be a nice gesture that he cares.

He should also insist that he will be accessible still by cell and email if there any questions.

My exact advice, after being clear it's the new employers requirement.

But before that, I'd tell him to give a very honest thought towards whether it's reasonable they're asking him to do this. Doesn't give you the feeling they'll value his time off requests in future, holidays, etc.

I'd be more interested in knowing what it is that the new company is only giving him 2 days.

Still, how much notice are they given? Are they put on some sort of notice or probation?

I say if you hate the job and hate the people do it as long as you have a job waiting for you when you leave

And this is the kind of company he wants to go work for? Get ready to be treated the same way...

It's not ideal to give less than 2 weeks notice

I have never understood this tradition. Other than for low-skilled or food service workers, 2 weeks might as well be 2 days. It takes me at least 2-3 months to recruit, interview, hire and on-board staff. I ask for 4-6 months notice for planned retirement. I have only lost a few staff to other employment opportunities and they have been able to give me 6-8 weeks. Not enough time to have overlap for the transition, but at least all projects can be completed or left in a solid position.

not entirely true. if you are fired for cause, of course they are not gonna cut you any slack, as they are generally trying to cut their losses in the first place.

I have seen very few individuals get laid off for business reasons who did not get at least a couple of weeks of severance pay....sometimes it is a pretty damn hefty severance package.

they could/would fire him/lay him off without two weeks notice.. he has no obligation to give them notice.

but personally.. i'd offer to temporarily help out on the nights and weekends to help ease the transition

Employers I have worked for would not count any days off, for any reason, in the notice.

Not knowing the situation, I have always told employees that if you are going to a job that won't allow you to give 2 weeks notice, then I wouldn't go to the job.
