Wait, what, you didn't get an itemized bill every month during representation?
I have sent bills for a month that are staggering but they were accurate. The two big issues to look for is block billing and excessive sized incrementals.
I suggest you use the attorney you have now to sort this out.

You need to get an itemized bill from your former counsel. Since there are hotshot lawyers on here that have time during a work day to post on a message board, I’m sure if you report back with the billing results you’ll get more helpful opinions.

There’s probably a small area I could refer to SFP if they ever came across my desk, but he’d be dumb to refer anything to me. Everyone likes to hold on to their own car accident cases

You should have a written fee agreement. So what does it say? You are over-complicating this.
ETA: What did you do to get sued AND have to pay for your own lawyer as opposed to your insurer fronting the defense? Intentional act???

Call the State Bar. Tell them what happened. They will refer you to a fee dispute resolution process. He will not want the State Bar looking into what he did

Why would you expect an itemized bill for a retainer?
It showed the hours tallied up then x his hourly rate and how much of my retainer was still not used yet. Then after my initial retainer was used up, he'd just include an invoice with that monthly statement.

Hourly fee agreements don't have to be in writing.

Are your sure all he did was answer discovery? Assuming you are a defendant, he would have had to investigate the claims against you to have enough information to file an answer or exceptions. If you were plaintiff he would have had to draft petition. It could conceivably take several hours to do these things including research depending on how complicated the case. Almost all lawyers will send a bill with the time spend on each task so you can see whether it’s reasonable or not.
