Did something real similar 12 years ago for Gustav from SE LA to Plano. Thought I might not have a house to come back to, but it was just tree and fence damage.
You made the right move if you have a kid. No A/C after a storm is brutal. Hope the ones that stayed have generators and/or are tough enough to handle the aftermath.
