I asked that to get some perspective for tiger91. She just answered, and I gave her my response a post or two above yours.
People say they're not leaving for a 1 or a 2 all the time, but as she just mentioned, she's never rode out a hurricane.

We went to Ville Platte for Lili -- the wind there was as bad as here from what I remember being told. The eye passed right over my parents home.
Regarding the water, we didn't flood for Rita (old house but it flooded for 2016 August flood) and our new house didn't flood for Rita OR the 2016 flood.
I guess we'll just continue our wait and see approach for now.

The surge impacts were widespread, but most people know they're prone to that. The problem was the people who left in Lafayette and New Iberia who felt like they were duped, or the people who stayed and now think they've ridden out a hurricane.
Lili weakened from a cat 4 to a cat 1 overnight. Our intensity modeling was pretty arse back then and we didn’t have them all over the internet for people to check so people saw cat 4 and bailed. People needed to leave because it it made landfall as a cat 4 it would have been really bad. That part of the state didn’t have a storm that strong coming towards it since Andrew in 92 so that also spooked a lot of people to evacuate.

IIRC, Lili was the first time "dry air" became a mainstream talking point. It eroded right at landfall due to a pocket that it gulped up.

I was a sheriff's deputy in St. Martin parish when Lili hit La in 2002. ALL sheriff's office employees were required to be at SMPCC Jail I for that storm. If Lili hadn't weakened as much as it did prior to landfall, FEMA had informed Sheriff Fuselier that he didn't have enough body bags. They were expecting storm surge water to reach I-10.
