My brother's neighbor in Lakeview received a $73,000 bill for his 1800sq ft house and family of 3. He's been disputing it since July 2018. So imagine the $1 million+ plus fricked up bills for places like the Dome or Smoothie King Center or high rise building may have received and is currently being disputed.

Due to the S&WB lying about how many pumps were functional and not doing their job two years ago, New Orleans residents and businesses had millions in damage due to a regular thunderstorm. And let's not forget all the boil water alerts because of sleeping S&WB employees that have caused New Orleans hotels and restaurants to lose tons of money. They should just shut up, call it even and fix their collection process moving forward. We are already in the middle of an 8-year increase in water bills by 10% each year to fix/replace the outdated drainage system.
If people don't pay their water bill in 60 days and have an average water bill, cut it off. I guarantee they will figure out a way to get it paid and fast.

And the money has been allocated to keeping it running, make repairs, and update as necessary, but it hasn't been done bc the corruption at the top is just staggering and rivaled only by the incompetence.
I don't blame Cantrell for us being in this mess bc it has been decades in the making, but running to BR for more taxpayer money isn't an answer I support.
SWB needs to be privatized. Period. I bitch about Entergy and Cox, but you better believe they don't have billing issues, and when their shite breaks, it's up and running within the hour usually.

You have a ton of people with fricked up bills that are currently disputing those bills. On the other side you have people that flat out refuse to pay their bills and their water is never shut off. Once they realize this, what’s the point of actually paying anything if there is no consequences.

That's a relief. Student daughter called and said she needed $500 for the water bill. What?? Moved in and didn't get a bill for six months.
Is SWB due the money, sure, but most people pay what they see and don't arbitrarily send money if there isn't a bill, then boom.
If SWB has $134M in individual receivables, they'll be lucky to get .1 on the $1. It's to far gone to import a team of executioners to start pulling thousands of meters, and they obviously don't have the capability or customer service to work out plans for people to prorate their $1000+ past-due over time.
Is SWB due the money, sure, but most people pay what they see and don't arbitrarily send money if there isn't a bill, then boom.

I get the people who are disputing bills, but not paying anything (as many are doing) should not be an option.
SWB should set a base rate charge for each address based on past billings or number of residents. If you're disputing, that's what you must pay until the issue is resolved. Overcharges to the customer during this time should be credited to the account.
If you just haven't paid, you must bring your account up to date within 90 days or it gets shut off. Period.
If you don't have functioning water meter, or other unspecified damages/leaks not on your property, you pay the base rate until SWB can address it.
It's not that fricking hard, but the Dems in control don't want to shite on their constituents.
