Eh, Ukraine isn’t going to sign off on Kherson.

Ukraine better not fall for that. Putin will go back, lick his wounds and try again later on.

maybe im wrong and the polilng and whatnot doesnt paint a true picture but it seems like this has largely changed and that they arent holding their noses and joining NATO with a mistrust of the west and the US but enthusiastically doing joining and understanding where we were coming from with NATO largely due to their perception of the world and perceived european stability has been shattered
Polling is at 76% pro, might even reach 80%. They are expecting 180 out of 200 votes in their Parliament.

Russian forces may be abandoning efforts at a wide encirclement of Ukrainian troops along the Izyum-Slovyansk-Debaltseve line in favor of shallower encirclements of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.
quote:
It is unclear if Russian forces can encircle, let alone capture, Severodonetsk and Lysychansk even if they focus their efforts on that much-reduced objective.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive around Kharkiv is also forcing the Russian command to make hard choices, as it was likely intended to do.
quote:
Key Takeaways
Russian forces made marginal gains to the north of Severodonetsk and have likely captured Rubizhne and Voevodivka.
Russian forces fired intensively on Ukrainian positions in northern Kharkiv to stop the ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive around Kharkiv City. The artillery focus on Ukrainian positions has likely diverted the Russian artillery that remains in range of Kharkiv to the more urgent task of stopping the Ukrainian advance.
Russian forces are strengthening their position on Snake Island in an effort to block Ukrainian maritime communications and capabilities in the northwestern Black Sea on the approaches to Odesa.

Yahoo News - Could this be how Putin declares victory and leaves?
History has taught us that no "treaty" with Russia is ever honored. They'll just move the goalposts and reinvade when they think they have an edge.
It's similar to when Russia kept saying they'd allow humanitarian corridors - and then fired on civilians the moment a mass of them was visible.

Russia has signaled intent to end 'current phase' of invasion, cut losses with Kherson referendum: expert

Russia has potentially signaled intent to end the invasion of Ukraine and integrate the Kherson region, an intelligence expert told Fox News Digital.
That is so cute. These "insiders" think that Ukraine will allow Russia to end the war on its terms. Russia can hold a fake vote in Kherson if it wants but Ukraine is not going to recognize it. I spoke on the phone with my former medical school roommate about 10 days ago. If y'all recall he is from Ukraine and is a doctor but was a tank commander in the Ukrainian military before medical school. He was called up back in mid February. This is the short and edited version of what he said when I asked him what the Ukrainian soldiers thought about peace prospects.
"We (the Ukrainian soldiers) might have considered letting Russia take Crimea and the Donbas if they had offered to purchase them before they invaded. However, we have fought them and we have lost our fear of them. They are unorganized and drunk walking POS who do not even have night vision, proper body armor, or good vodka. After seeing the destruction, death, and crimes those ******* committed in Ukraine we (the Ukrainian soldiers) will not stop even until every last Russian soldier is driven from Ukraine and Crimea. Then when that happens we will tie the Russian ****** (I believe he was referring to the war criminals with that profanity but he was talking so fast in Ukrainian that I could not understand him) to Putin's Bridge (the Kerch Straits Bridge) and our entire army will piss on them before we dynamite the bridge with the ********* still alive on it. Only then will we make peace. If Russia nukes us then they better hope they kill every last one of us. If our corrupt politicians sell us out then we will tie them to the bridge too."
This is from an officer who has a wife and child and was a doctor and was really chill before the war. I cannot imagine what the younger soldiers would say to letting any part of Ukraine go to Russia.

If this is true, it is a huge development. It will signal the beginning of the end.

If the Afghans only had 10% off the resolve to be free that the Ukrainians have, they’d be free of the Taliban and we would have left in 2010

If Kherson becomes Russia through a sham referendum and Ukraine launches a counter offensive into Kherson, Putin can tell his people and the world it is now Russia that is being invaded. Maybe that opens up a new box of weapons Putin is willing to use, or at least threaten to use to get the west to stop bankrolling the conflict.

Um...
There was a long, fierce insurgency in Germany after the fall of Berlin.
Japan was different because you had the Emperor ordering his people to not resist.

Apparently they have deployed several squads of Russian dolphins to defend the island.

If you are not watching developments in Sri Lanka. Start now. This is what "food insecurity" really means. This is why Russia's invasion of Ukraine has world wide effects, because losing Ukraine's grain exports prices food too high for poor folks less developed nations. 1/

Specifically the FOB's around Asadabad, the Pech River Valley, and the Watapur district were various areas we had FOBs that were positioned where Afghan Government forces tried to send the ANA and Afghan security forces to areas away from the their tribes and loyalties to help keep them in line as they had just as many enemies outside of the wire just as we did under ISAF and in NE Afghanistan. If you kept the ANA and Afghan security forces closer to home they were likely to desert or switch sides on you, which was a major issue in Kandahar.

Just more proof that the GWB and BHO admins were stupid for trying to make a western style nation in central Asia. We should have restored the king of Afghanistan and then had him preside over a ruling council of tribal leaders.

Can we kick Turkey out because I'd rather have Sweden and Finland as members anyway.
