That lunatic ran a coup in 2014. We should have stayed out of it.
Leaked phone call with Pyatt.

So is that the line that can’t be crossed?… the US can’t do anything that results in dead soldiers?

Then what’s the point in having a military?… frick it. We’ve got the coast guard… we just keep enough active troops and air forces to protect border from invasion… then we’re good.

At the risk of detailing the thread even further, there’s an argument that we were never meant to have a standing army. As Adams put it, “America does not go abroad in search of monsters to slay.”

Obviously not the case anymore but I think after Iraq and Afghanistan, a lot of Americans would appreciate a return to that ideal.

Edit: Wrong founding father.

And I understand that position, the unending war of the last 20 years is expensive and the rewards dont always equal the cost.

But isolationism based off that fatigue isnt the way ahead either and politicians that tap in to that fatigue for quick political gain with zero consideration given to the secondary effects of isolationism is scary in the world we live in.

Our Ukraine policy is Victoria Nuland's policy. frick Victoria Nuland and her generations of pent up anger toward Russians because they kick her grandfather out of Odessa. That's her deep seeded motivation against Russia. The rest of DC's motivation is grift for NGO's, military contractors and 10% for the Big Guy.

Our Ukraine policy is literally the Truman Doctrine which has been in place for nearly 8 decades. This doctrine forms the basis for NATO. Compared to other US proxy and unilateral actions, support for Ukraine is much more closely aligned with the doctrine. This is also why Europe supports it.

Truman Doctrine: "the principle that the US should give support to countries or peoples threatened by Soviet forces or Communist insurrection. First expressed in 1947 by US President Truman in a speech to Congress seeking aid for Greece and Turkey, the doctrine was seen by the Communists as an open declaration of the Cold War"

The only interpretation that's needed is to say that Putin's Russia is the successor state to the Soviet Union.

ETA: There might be a valid argument to be had that during the Yeltsin/Clinton years in the 90's there could have been more steps taken to prevent the return of Soviet thought in Russia via Putin, who is now running at a dictatorship capacity.

It’s hilarious when y’all pretend to care about this purported coup when Putin has literally been controlling Russia for 20 + years. We’re supposed to believe, or care, that a puppet/ mouthpiece for Putin was deposed against the will of the people, who subsequently have elected pro western leaders (and had before hand too, since 2004 when they were able to finally throw off the Soviet yoke).

But you realize “a return to that ideal” has consequences right?… just bc the US would be isolationist, doesn’t mean the rest of the world would.

We all realize that when the US was isolationist, the two worst catastrophes in world history took place?… and that since we abandoned that policy, we’ve been in the Long Peace?

Being isolationist in today's world is simply not possible.

Hell it wasn't possible a hundred years ago.

We will have trouble feeding our families if the U.S. decides to go isolationist and decouples from the East

I can go home and watch my oldest son play fortnite and talk shite through his controller to some random dude in Belgium, while my wife (no pics) skypes with her cousin who's vacationing in the Caribbean, my youngest having an online class that includes a kid currently living in Poland, and me watching a chess tournament in Oslo live all simultaneously...and that's just in one house.

We will never become isolationist, especially when our own country is the hub of everything technology, pop culture, sports, etc.

It’s funny sometimes, the people calling for American isolationism are the same ones complaining if 2 foreign nations start trading oil in a currency other than USD.

Some of you are conflating non-interventionalist with isolationist. They are not the same.

What Warhawk did you hear this from? This is just an ignorant take. The U.S. was hardly a regional power at the onset of the first world war and was in no position militarily to prevent the second. You think American imperialism would have prevented the Kaiser from crossing into Belgium when they already had the world's greatest land army on their western border and the Russian leviathan to their east?

The Long Peace is a misnomer. The long peace for who? The Koreans? The Vietnamese? Or are we referring to the state of perpetual war where we use robots to bomb people so it doesn't feel real?

Those are close to the three top reasons to have a military that can intervene.

Ok.

If you have power you have to project it, if you dont your power goes away.

In some instances, sure. In others, it's best to speak softly and carry a big stick.

In regard to Ukraine, it appears we've projected quite a bit of power in this conflict already, no?

Or... (and I'm not trying to put words in yours or anyone's mouth here) are we considered "isolationists" unless we're flying combat sorties and sending in the paratroopers?
