You are thinking of the Chancellor. The President is a totally separate office and he has been in that position since 2017.

Several PM's and/or Presidents from European countries are traveling to meet Zelensky in Kyiv. Kyiv sent word that the German President was "not wanted". He boarded his plane in Poland and returned to Berlin.
IMO that was a bad idea. He admitted weeks ago that he made mistakes in regards to Russia, Nordstream 2 etc. He's trying to make amends, let him. Zelenskyy is fighting for his life and needs all the friends he can get especially powerful ones like the President of Germany. Now is not the time to be petty.

No one ever said that.
He simply stayed in Kyiv and didn’t follow the global precedent of leaving and heading the resistance as a government in exile. He made that decision when most thought Kyiv would fall in short order.
For reference: by this point in time in the WWII German invasion of France, “Free France” was already a London based operation and Vichy France was already in place.
