ISW Update March 1 2025

Key Takeaways:
Senior US officials are suggesting that the United States may cut all aid to Ukraine, although US President Donald Trump has not indicated any such intention. Cutting the current flow of aid to Ukraine would directly undermine President Trump’s stated goal of achieving a sustainable peace in Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces enabled by essential US assistance are inflicting unsustainable losses on Russian forces while holding them to marginal gains. This situation, combined with the severe challenges Russia will face in 2025, offers the US great leverage in peace negotiations. A suspension of ongoing US military assistance to Ukraine would encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue to increase his demands and fuel his conviction that he can achieve total victory through war.
Curtailing aid to Ukraine would risk diminishing US influence in the world and emboldening US adversaries.
Putin, not Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, remains the main obstacle to a lasting peace agreement on Ukraine.
The Kremlin launched another informational effort intended to discourage additional US and European military assistance to Ukraine by claiming that Russia has won the war in Ukraine.
European countries remain committed to supporting the Ukrainian military and defense industry, however, amid preparations for a European defense summit about Ukraine on March 2.
Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Toretsk and Russian forces recently advanced near Velyka Novosilka.
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) continues to recruit medically unfit soldiers in an effort to address personnel shortages.

Key Takeaways
Russian forces are setting conditions to envelop Kyiv from the west and attempting to open up a new axis of attack from the east that would let them encircle the capital. It is unclear if Russia has sufficient combat power to complete such an encirclement and hold it against Ukrainian counter-attacks.
Russian forces will likely launch a renewed ground offensive to seize Kharkiv following the air/artillery/missile attack it has been conducting in the past 24 hours.
Russian and Russian proxy forces will likely solidify the “land bridge” linking Rostov-on-Don with Crimea, allowing Russian forces to move more rapidly from Rostov to reinforce efforts further west.
Russia’s successful seizure of Kherson city may allow Russian forces to resume their interrupted drive toward Mykolayiv and Odesa.
Belarusian forces have likely entered the war on Russia’s side despite denials by the Belarusian president.

Why do you keep posting that? Are we supposed to think you are smart because you are aware that it’s not a video game?

At what point are they "unsustainable"? It seems that ISW has been making claims along these lines for some time, yet (unfortunately) Russia seems to continue to sustain the losses and make gains.
This is my issue with ISW, they make these claims, painting a misleading picture, yet don't revisit them to see how well they have held up.

Logic would tell you if ISW fan fiction stories were accurate Russia would of been out of men a year ago

Ironically, most experts and pundits believed that Putin would succeed in taking Kiev in a couple of weeks. It has now been three years, yet Putin's forces remain bogged down trading thousands of lives for little gain.

Ukraine had a formidable air force when Russia invaded. What happened to it?
Seems like only a few months ago we were told the F16's were finally going to change the tide of the war in Ukraine's favor. What happened to them?
Ukraine's air force was older and small compared to Russia's even though much of Eastern Europe's former Soviet satellites gave Ukraine their old Soviet fighters.
A dozen F16's are a drop in the bucket in a war where they need a couple of hundred modern fighters to achieve air superiority. The pace of development in Ukraine's Western air power has been ridiculously glacial. Someone needs to grow a spine.

You don’t have a clue. You jump in here and start crap for no reason. I have never thought Ukraine would win or is even winning.
I support Ukraine, and I’m surprised Russia has done so poorly after three years.
My opinion has nothing to do with your video games.

Logic would also tell you that a large nation Russia wouldn’t have to “draft” prisoners are get the N Koreans to provide manpower to retake their own land.
They obviously have a lot of men, but for political reasons I guess, they can’t declare war and use them to their advantage.

Advanced over a kilometer? In one day. Wow, that’s almost 3/4s if a mile.

Maybe the reason Trump can't out-negotiate Zelensky is cos Trump appointed Tulsi who leaks everything to Russia and Budanov knows everything we know so Zelensky in fact knows what we've told Trump to do before Trump does..

Little distances can be pivotable in wars, less than 3/4 of a mile, maybe as little as 600 meters......the height Little Boy was dropped from. Thats the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima for you war experts.

Are you saying 350 billion dollars of support, our intel, our satellite technology, our training in people operating weapons systems like the atacoms.....made no difference, Ukraine did it all on their own???????????

Russia droning the power grid again last night, and this time the US is not there to repair it.
They have systematically taken out much of their generation and now its the nuclear plants. Seems Russia does not want to touch them so they are now targeting the 103 substations they supply. They were already facing blackouts 40% of the time expect this to increase, and along with it water supply, sewer, etc.
Meanwhile zelensky out touring the world, guess his hotel suites are warm.

8 Demands Trump Has Made Before Zelensky Can Return
After flying to D.C. to purportedly sign a mineral rights deal, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky wound up being kicked out of the White House until further notice. Not good!
President Trump has issued a list of eight demands that Zelensky must meet in order to be allowed back on White House grounds:
1. Purchase a tuxedo t-shirt for formal events: It's a step in the right direction.
2. Spell out "I'm sorry" on the White House lawn with rare earth minerals: Ideally while Zelensky stands crying with a boombox over his head.
3. Arrange a special screening with all the other actors in Paddington: Trump loves that little bear.
4. Say one nice thing about Vladimir Putin: Just suck it up and say Putin looks good shirtless on a horse.
5. Learn how to cuss in English: We strongly prefer to be cursed at in our national language.
6. Bring two Big-Macs with Extra Large fries: Not for a particular reason, Trump was just hungry when he made this list.
7. Call your buddy Ben Stiller and tell him to please dye the gray out of his hair: It looks terrible.
8. Bring back ten of the dollars from the $100 billion in aid that he "doesn't know the location of": Shouldn't be that hard.
Just eight simple tasks and we can put this whole affair behind us. Your move, Zelensky.
