So happy for these people and their families. Whatever happens next in Syria, everyone can rejoice that people like this are free.

Well, everyone except the Russia bros here, and Putin, and Khamenei, and the faculty and students of American Ivy League universities who pretend that Israel and the US are what's wrong with the Middle East.

Hey CitizenK, I have read some speculation that a previously discussed gas pipeline from Qatar to Turkey could now be built, which could supply Europe with much cheaper gas than Russia can provide. Thoughts?

I don't know about that but it would not cross friendly territory due going through Saudi Arabia.

Biden put the boot down on the proposed pipeline from Cyprus, Israel due "Climate Change" It should have already been completed.

Today is likely going to be a big day for the Russian military bases in Syria. Can't wait to see how it goes.

Zelenskyy comments on casualties.

Since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine has lost 43,000 soldiers killed in action on the battlefield. There have been 370,000 cases of medical assistance for the wounded. It also needs to be mentioned that in our army approximately half of the soldiers wounded in action are later returning to the battlefield, and that our data also includes light or repeat injuries.

Russia withdrawing warships from Syrian base in Tartus - Ukraine’s defense intel

08.12.2024 14:44

The Russians are pulling their warships from the Syrian base in Tartus, transferring weapons and military equipment by air from the Khmeimim base.

This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry.

"The rapid process of overthrowing the Bashar Assad regime in Syria was marked by the shameful flight of the Russian contingent from the territory of the Arab Republic. In the capital of Syria, Damascus, the dictator's residence, government buildings, and the central office of national television are under the control of opposition forces," the report says.

According to Ukrainian intelligence, on December 8, the frigate Admiral Grigorovich of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and the cargo ship Engineer Trubin of the Russian Northern Fleet left Tartus for the Mediterranean Sea.

The Russians are also transferring what’s left of their weapons and military equipment from Syria by military aircraft from the Khmeimim air base.

“After seizing Damascus, the opposition forces are advancing toward the coast so the likely loss of Russia’s military bases in Tartus and Khmeimim will finalize the Kremlin’s defeat in the Middle East,” the agency said.

We know Putin very well—he is addicted to war. He began his career with a brutal war against Chechnya and has been constantly fueling other wars. He can only be stopped by strength—the strength of world leaders who can become leaders of peace. We count on America and the entire world to help stop Putin. The only things he fears are America and global unity.

It is precisely such peace through strength that we discuss with all our partners, as well as the steps and guarantees needed for the people and the state attacked by Russia. War cannot be endless—only peace must be permanent and reliable.

This should appeal to the American right wing. This is certainly an appeal to Trump.

The Syrian National Transitional Government has released its first statement since the fall of the Assad government

"O free sons of Syria,

After long years of injustice, tyranny and oppression, and after great sacrifices made by the sons and daughters of this dear homeland, we announce today to the great Syrian people and the entire world that the regime of Bashar al-Assad has fallen, and that he has fled the country, leaving behind a legacy of destruction and suffering.

On this historic day, we announce that the forces of the revolution and opposition have taken control of affairs in beloved Syria, and we affirm our commitment to building a free, just and democratic state in which all citizens are equal without discrimination.

We pledge before God and before the people the following:

1. Preserving the unity and sovereignty of Syrian territory.

2. Protecting all citizens and their property, regardless of their affiliations.

3. Working to rebuild the state and its institutions on the foundations of freedom and justice.

4. Striving to achieve comprehensive national reconciliation, and returning refugees and displaced persons to their homes in safety and dignity.

5. Holding accountable all those who have committed crimes against the Syrian people, in accordance with the law and justice.

We call on all the Syrian people to unite and stand together at this historic stage, and we affirm that the new Syria will not be the monopoly of anyone, but rather a homeland for all.

Long live a free and proud Syria,

And peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you. "

National Transitional Council

IMHO, this is what started the latest Syrian civil war in 2011. Putin realized the threat of such a pipeline to Russia's dominant position as gas supplier to Europe, and entered the war to stop it.

With such an opportunity to all Gulf states, this pipeline should now override any issues the Qataris (or anyone else) may have with the Saudis. But then again, it's the Middle East. Full grown men are hard to find.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia are rivals for influence they funded each a side in post Qadaffi Libya. Just to get out of Qatar such a pipeline would have to transit Saudi Arabia. I don't see that ever happening, Russia or no Russia.

Bashar al-Assad has been overthrown, fleeing Damascus after a rapid rebel advance. But the Syrian dictator is far from the only president likely to be despairing today, for Vladimir Putin is another big loser here.

For Putin, the collapse of the Syrian regime and removal of Assad from power poses two critical problems. Firstly, it represents a critical strategic loss. Secondly, it represents a stark decline in Russia’s global prestige.

Russia now seems almost certain to permanently lose both its naval base at Tartus and its air base at Latakia, its only such bases in the Middle East. The loss of Tartus is particularly painful, as the base allowed Russia to conduct sustained surface and submarine operations in the Mediterranean Sea, and served as a conduit for operations into the Indian Ocean. This power, and the global prestige it granted, is now gone. With the Russian Black Sea fleet already locked out of most of those waters under threat of Ukrainian attack, Moscow has lost permanent access to any warm-water ports — a huge dent to Putin’s global ambitions.

TASS says that Assad is in Moscow. The fake plane crash was a ruse to provide cover.

He was given asylum for "humanitarian reasons."

Putin is such a caring humanitarian.

Agreed. Russia has been opposed to central Asia and Middle East reaching the EU.

Putin needs that gas to transit Russia pipeline or to stay stranded and processed into LNG. RU subsidized gas price for their industrial base and citizens allowed Putin to maintain power. Now that Gazprom has to sell gas to EU with more competition, I hope that Putin will lose his power.

Where are they sailing? Can they sail into the Black Sea at the moment?
