Germany enabled Russia buy subsidizing the EU's push for Green Energy by using cheap natural gas.
Originally, Nordstream (1) was 100% about undermining Germany's ability to say no to Russia on any issue. It was designed to breakeven at best when first announced. Fukushima changed that with a little help from Russian propaganda with fear causing Germany to shutdown nuke plants ahead of schedule.
The real truth is that the Brotherhood Pipeline system going through Ukraine never operated near capacity and Nordstream was never needed in the first place.
France had considered switching to combined cycle power plants to replace its mostly nuclear power production as older nuke plants were scheduled for retirement. However, to do so would have made France dependent on Russia.
Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 after it had signed agreement with Shell, Exxon and Chevron to develop tight shale formations, especially in the Donbas under Shell.
Russia was able to play Enron games are getting hold of natural gas underground storage in Europe, which it did especially in 2021. Imported LNG today is cheaper than Russian natural gas via pipeline from 2021.

Behind the scenes: The call between Trump and Zelensky lasted around 25 minutes, according to the sources who were briefed on its details.
After Zelensky congratulated Trump, the president-elect said he will support Ukraine, but didn't go into details.
Three sources briefed on the call all told Axios that Zelensky felt the call went well and that it did not increase his anxiety about Trump's victory. One source said it "didn't leave Zelensky with a feeling of despair."
Musk also weighed in during the call to say he will continue supporting Ukraine through his Starlink satellites, the sources said. Musk did not respond to a request for comment.
Starlink has been crucial to Ukraine's war effort, though Musk has also mocked Zelensky's requests for U.S. aid, and Zelensky rebuked the billionaire for proposing a peace plan of his own in 2022.
Reality check: Much went unsaid, and much remains unknown. Trump and Zelensky did not delve into policies like Trump's purported plan to end the war, or the prospect of further U.S. aid, the sources said.

What they're saying:
"Nothing of what Zelensky and his aides heard from Trump and his team in private has been alarming or made us feel that Ukraine is going to be the one who pays the price."
— Source familiar with the conversations
"I had an excellent call with President Trump and congratulated him on his historic landslide victory — his tremendous campaign made this result possible," Zelensky wrote on X after the call on Wednesday.
"Strong and unwavering U.S. leadership is vital for the world and for a just peace," Zelensky said, adding that he and Trump agreed to maintain close dialogue.
Yes, but: In a speech in Budapest on Thursday, Zelensky made clear that despite his positive call with Trump, he "cannot yet know what his actions will be."
The big picture: During the campaign, Trump repeatedly said he would immediately push for Ukraine-Russia peace talks if elected, and even claimed he could get a deal within 24 hours.
On Thursday in Budapest, Zelensky acknowledged that Trump wants to end the war quickly but stressed they did not discuss that in detail during the call.
"If it's just fast, it means losses for Ukraine. I just don't yet understand how this could be in any other way. Maybe we do not know something, do not see," Zelensky said.
He stressed Ukraine wants "a fair end to the war" that includes security guarantees.
The intrigue: Musk also joined Trump's call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who told reporters that Musk and Trump had been having dinner together at the time.
What to watch: Even though they're wary of potential peace talks, the Ukrainians see some upside in breaking with the current "negative status-quo," one source briefed on government deliberations said.
Three sources with knowledge of Ukrainian government assessments said that Kyiv expects that if peace talks do take place, they will agree to participate but Putin will either reject the talks or take steps that doom them to failure.

That's not a good thing for the Russia's economy (or Iran's). Removing regulations and driving down the price of oil benefits the American economy while also damaging those of our enemies.
That's obviously not a strategy that Biden/Harris could or would pursue, because that would offend their environmentalist backers.
That's why Putin was making financial contributions to the most noxious "environmentalist organizations." I'm sure he loved Biden's fossil fuels climate change boost to Russia's main money source too.

US lifts ban on military contractors being sent to Ukraine – media
Oleh Pavliuk, Tetyana Oliynyk — Friday, 8 November 2024, 21:21
The administration of US President Joe Biden has overturned a ban on US military contractors working in Ukraine to maintain and repair equipment given to Ukraine's Armed Forces.
Source: an anonymous US official in a comment to Reuters and CNN, as reported by European Pravda
Details: The White House made a decision on contractor activity in Ukraine in early November, prior to the US presidential election. It will enable the Pentagon to give contracts to American corporations to operate in Ukraine for the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022.
According to Reuters, the Biden administration intends to speed up the maintenance and repair of Ukrainian weapons systems.
CNN clarifies that the US contractors will service F-16 aircraft and Patriot air defence systems.
The channel's sources anticipate that there will be several dozen to several hundred American contractors in Ukraine, and that they will be stationed in areas away from the contact line for security purposes.

That's not anti-Zelensky btw, as he (presumably) was not the source of the leak.
Nonetheless, they've already lowered the bar for Putin.
Life is not always fair. There will be a deal. Ukraine will lose land. It should also gain great national pride in standing up to the onslaught of a major world military power.
But Ukraine needs to be working to settle this .... quickly

To the posters that have been involved in this thread for years and thousands of pages, what outcome do you want for this war?
Ukraine retaining the vast majority of what it started off with pre invasion is a win, seeing as Russia’s goals were maximalist. In a perfect world I would l say Crimea, etc but now is not the time and I don’t see Ukraine capable of pulling that off. I see a DMZ along the current battle lines as a practicable option if not ideal. Hold out for someone who isn’t Putin and negotiate borders down the road.

Trump and Elon (both raised as churchgoing lads) told Zelenskyy to stop sending these Christian boys out to slaughter. It's got to stop, Volodymyr. you've got to end the slaughter.

Zelensky told Trump that, when Ukraine gets Crimea back, US companies will be able to develop all the offshore oil deposits, and Trump said that was awesome and we'll help you do it.
Zelensky also promised Trump that, after push Russia out, Ukraine will help overthrow the ayatollahs in Iran.
This is, of course, just silly speculation on my part, but it is every bit as factual as the fantasies of the Russia bros here.

U.S. will send contractors to Ukraine to help fix its weapons
Washington Post:
Washington Post:
quote:
The Pentagon said Friday that it will send “a small number” of U.S. defense contractors to Ukraine, where they will repair advanced American-made weapons, including F-16 fighter jets, Bradley fighting vehicles and air defense systems, donated by Western allies amid Russia’s invasion.
quote:
The U.S.-funded contractors will be far from the front lines and won’t be fighting Russian forces, defense officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Their employers will be responsible for the contractors’ safety and security while in Ukraine, and “risk mitigation plans” will be required as part of companies’ bids for the work, officials said.
quote:
Ukrainian mechanics are increasingly versed in fixing Western weapons as they take abuse on the battlefield. But for more complex repairs, the U.S. has facilitated equipment transport to depots in Poland, including the replacement of worn artillery barrels and vehicles torn apart by mines and Russian fire.
U.S. personnel in Poland also have assisted Ukrainian forces through a practice known as “tele-maintenance,” in which they effectively act as customer service to help them fix problems remotely.
Ukrainian soldiers have told The Washington Post in interviews that they prefer waiting weeks for substantial repairs rather than using broken or faulty equipment. The stakes are high for infantry troops counting on that support, an officer in Ukraine’s 72nd Mechanized Brigade recently said, citing an example of battle tanks missing Russian targets because their gun barrels were dilapidated from overuse.
quote:
U.S. defense officials declined to say where in Ukraine the contractors will be based, citing security sensitivities, but noted that numerous U.S. companies already have personnel in the country to perform work for the Ukrainian government. U.S. contractors also already have signed contracts with the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, including to bolster Ukraine’s energy grid as it is attacked by Russian airstrikes and drones. A significant amount of international help for Ukraine is based in the western part of the country, far from the front line.

ISW Update Nov 8
quote:
Key Takeaways:
Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be assuming that US President-elect Donald Trump will defer to the Kremlin's interests and preferences without the Kremlin offering any concessions or benefits in return.
Putin's proposed "new world order" emphasizes an interconnected international system without great powers or security blocs, but the Kremlin's actions contradict and undermine his proposed ideals and principles.
Putin also acknowledged that Russia is dealing with a serious labor shortage and is largely reliant on migrants to address it.
Putin doubled down on an existing information operation falsely claiming that Ukraine violated its neutral status in an attempt to justify Russia's illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Putin notably attempted to downplay Russia's burgeoning relationship with North Korea during his November 7 Valdai Club statements, likely in an effort to maintain some semblance of a relationship with South Korea and discourage South Korean support for Ukraine.
The Kremlin continues to build its relationship with Venezuela as a means of consolidating and expanding its influence in the Western hemisphere.
The Ukrainian General Staff reported on November 8 that Ukrainian forces recorded 323 cases of Russian forces using ammunition equipped with chemical agents banned by the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in October 2024 alone.
Ukrainian forces recently advanced in northern Novoivanovka, Kursk Oblast.
Russian forces recently advanced south of Chasiv Yar, southeast of Kurakhove, and north of Vuhledar.
Regional Russian authorities continued to promote the expansion of newly established regional territorial defense formations by highlighting efforts to recruit women.
