Russian weapons depot ‘wiped off the face of the earth’ by Ukrainian drone attack, SBU source claims
by Elsa Court and The Kyiv Independent news desk September 18, 2024 11:12 AM
Ukrainian drones successfully targeted a weapons depot in Russia's Tver Oblast overnight, a source in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) told the Kyiv Independent on Sept. 18.
Photos and videos shared on Russian Telegram channels early on Sept. 18 showed a number of explosions and a large plume of smoke purportedly at the site of an ammunition depot in the town of Toropets.
Tver Oblast Governor Igor Rudenya reported that a fire had broken out in Toropets due to falling drone debris but claimed the situation was "under control."
Rudenya later announced part of the town's population would be evacuated from the area where "air defense is operating and the fire is being localized."
According to the source in the SBU, drones from the SBU, Ukraine's military intelligence, and Ukrainian Armed Forces struck a warehouse storing ballistic missiles, including Iskanders, anti-aircraft missiles, artillery ammunition, and KAB guided bombs.

quote:Apparently it's a collection of Russian ammunition depots getting droned near Toropets. The depots are said to contain upto 240 tons of missiles, ammunition and explosives and ~30000 tons of equipment.
I have no idea what they hit but it looks like Ukraine smoked something massive based on random Reddit videos I’m seeing. Big big booms and smoke billowing as far as you can see.
The depots were reported to be "indestructible." I guess we can confirm those reports were false.

This is one of the largest ammo explosions of the war -- likely the biggest.
There have already been three neighboring towns destroyed by fire.
I saw someone do some napkin math and calculate than what we saw explode was some 18 days worth of ordinance.
Much of the storage is hardened underground and likely did not explode, but the fact that the entire area is burning will likely make it inaccessible for days.
This is a big enough disaster for Russia that there will be a battlefield impact within a week.

Update: the explosions from underground bunkers resulted in a 2.8 magnitude earthquake.
From what I am reading, this supply base was the major source of all kinds of ammo for the northern groups of the Russian military. The effects in the Kursk and Kharkiv areas could be almost immediate.

The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, proposes excluding Russia from the UN Security Council, reports Reuters.
According to him, any member of the organization that engages in an illegal war, "like the one Russia is currently waging in Ukraine," should be removed.
Stubb also opposes the veto power in the Security Council. Reforms will be discussed next week in New York at the UN General Assembly.

???????? On the attack by Ukrainian UAVs on military depots in Toropets
During the night, Ukrainian forces carried out a massive UAV strike on various targets located in Russia. Air defenses were active in the Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, and Smolensk regions. One of the targets was an arsenal in the town of Toropets in Tver Region.
Despite official statements about a fire due to falling debris, this is obviously not the case. A partial evacuation has been announced in the area, with the population being evacuated to Zapadnaya Dvina.
The explosions at the depots were so powerful that they were detected by seismic monitoring systems. The first tremors of magnitude 2.8 were recorded at 3:56 am, followed by seven weaker ones, from 2 to 2.8 on the Richter scale.
Interestingly, the targeted depot was opened by the then Deputy Defense Minister of Russia, Bulgakov, who is now under investigation. According to the official's statements in 2018, the implementation of the complex would build a storage system for missiles, ammunition, and explosives that "meets the highest global standards". The arsenal "allows to shelter stocks of missiles and ammunition from external influence and ensure their safety and explosion and fire safety", and there was even a sauna on the territory, according to the report.
Perhaps, if everything that happened was caused by falling debris, the investigation has more work to do.

The minister also expressed hope that by the end of the year, it would be possible to organize a "significant peace conference" on Ukraine.

Catching up on this thread and came across this gem. You are inventing a person and personifying them in a way which amplifies your anger. Just an incredibly odd way of operating in the world.
Meh, go back and read some of 'thoughts' of the Ukraine-First LARP Bros about Russians.... not just the leadership or military apparatus, the actual people as a whole.
For one they are largely inaccurate given that there are a lot of different "flavors" of people that are all Russian because its such a large country. And its also disgusting given the point is dehumanize them.
Its become very clear over time that we have a couple individuals here with personal connections to Ukraine, they get very emotional about it, and they are trying to drag others down the "defend Ukraine no matter the cost" rabbit hole with them. How others aren't seeing that and calling it out like me and a few others have, I have no clue.
Offer is still open, btw.

What are you talking about? Trump put like 1,500 individual sanctions on Iran and weakened them immensely.
They have to build this narrative that Trump was just as weak as Biden on foreign policy because they are so desperate for this war to continue

MASSIVE win for Ukraine. Thousands of tons of explosives, shells, and rockets.

How about you just link the posts if you feel that they are dispositive examples of the exact thing to which you are referring?

Brother, you are the one being emotional by inventing a person who somehow happens to have all the traits you find abhorrent.
For the obsession you have with offers of literacy, you argue remarkably poorly, which isn't surprising given the content of your posts. Maybe save those offers for yourself.

What? How is this a response? This makes absolutely no sense, even from a historical perspective.
What does it seem like the Europeans are planning, in the long-term? They've been pretty open about what they envision the timeline of this conflict.

In all of Earth's history, Russia has never been fully integrated into Europe
Dear lord, we are talking about this conflict. What measures were taken by Europe in response to this conflict to isolate Russia?

Actually make an argument instead of pretending you know anything about the ME.
The sanctions regime, the maximum pressure campaign and other measures completely failed in checking Iran. And one key event which forms Iranian intransigence is the direct result of Trump's FP. But go ahead and post another picture like a dumbass.

Oh, there's no question that the sanctions have been economically devastating for Iran.
The point is that Iran's military and nuclear program have advanced in spite of the sanctions.
In my earlier post, I didn't blame Trump for the fact that his Iran policy failed. I blamed Iran. Obama tried the carrot and Trump tried the stick, and neither worked because Iran is Iran.
Trump's Iran policy was still better than Obama's, because at least Trump's policy didn't project weakness like Obama's did.
But neither worked. Iran continues to progress towards making nukes.
