re: Latest Updates: Russia-Ukraine Conflict

One of the things that I've wondered about is ultimate Ukrainian objectives in Kursk. There are new rumors today about the Ukrainian capture of Korenevo, though I personally do not think it is yet complete. But when it is, one possible maximalist objective could be to shorten the border by pushing northwest from there while also pushing southeast from Ulanove.
To be clear, this is not at all something that I actually expect Ukraine to accomplish. It's just a thought experiment.

I agree with you, then.
I’m currently reading THe Great Game, by Hopkirk. This book covers a century and a half of Russia and England struggling for hegemony in Central Asia and the Caucasus. I am struck by how many times Russia has invaded its neighbors. They do it incrementally, watching the West’s reaction, and determining whether more would be permitted. They always use the same lies for why they are doing it: it’s to protect the rights of ethnic Russians; it’s to protect the invaded country from some other enemy; or it’s to protect the area until the sovereign nation can get their forces there.

As soon as Russia started to put up a pontoon bridge I would hit it with a few FPVs and then just lob mortar rounds and self propelled artillery at them
Yeah but wait until Russian forces are actually crossing the bridge.

You know how Trump is always complaining that our European allies aren’t paying their fair share? That’s why.

you either pull all support or “all in” with support to actually defeat Russia.
Instead we chose this “middle ground” of pussying around that accomplished very little.
The idea was to avoid the kind of escalation that would have Russia using tactical nuclear weapons.

Right. And that made sense early on in the conflict, when Russia was perceived to be much stronger than they actually were (and when they were stronger than they are now).
It also made sense to push for a unified NATO response, so the Biden administration didn't want to be too far out in front of Germany (remember the horrible German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht?).
So, through most of 2022, I defended the Biden administration's response, as there was logic in it, but the last eight or nine months is a different story, as those factors aren't in play anymore.

I'm still wondering where the citizens of Kursk are with personal weapons like those who came out of the woodworks in Ukraine in Feb 2022.
Sheeple much?
Sheeple much?

Then you do nothing.
Like I said, the middle of the road was pointless.
I get it, it’s easy enough to look back on this with hindsight. That said, after about a year I think there was an opportunity to force the issue to Russia but we didn’t.

Doing nothing in 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea and Donbas is what led Russia to do again in 2022
Everything g they have done to date has been 6-9 month later then it should have. If not more.

Thanks to whoever referenced Russia House. I watched the movie again tonight. It's definitely a good movie.
Per a friend who worked at NSA after injury in Lebanon as a USMC officer under Reagan, that the dogs couldn't get out the kennel is actually bullseye accurate.

Russia’s Shiveluch volcano has erupted following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck off the eastern coast of the country, according to state-run media outlet TASS.
“According to visual evaluations, the ash column is rising as high as 8 kilometers (5 miles) above the sea level,” TASS reported Sunday morning local time, adding the volcano had released a gush of lava.
There are no reports of people injured, TASS said.“

Ring of Fire and because of the tectonic plate activity, there are no gas or oil pipelines from Sakhalin Island to China, it's target customer.

Better to take it out while being built because you are targeting engineers which are rarer and more specialized than infantry.
This goes back to the kill the funny stuff first mantra. If you see a hundred targets in your battlespace and 98 look alike and 2 look different you should assume they are high value targets and should be focused on.

Those firearms were handed out to the people in 2022. The Russians government has not done that because it fears an armed populace. The difference in the response of the Ukrainian people compared to the Russian people is an example of why an armed populace is a good thing and causes fear in the hearts of tyrannical governments.

I saw a report that the evacuated had the young men separated and impressed into the Russian army. Still very different than Ukrainians lining up to get AK's.
