Cultural Assimilation... Fundamentalist Islam is against it, since the ways of the Secular West are "evil." But any religion at the level of Fundamentalism is in that same place (see some posts here by certain people)...

But your typical "Jihadist" knows nothing about their cause... they're just young guys who are under-employed, feel cheated and screwed and looked down upon and spend too much time online and want to feel powerful. No different from the typical people radicalized into "identity groups" or even just criminal gangs.

The dynamic in Egypt actually gives a look at things, though...

Egypt had been a Military DIctatorship under Mubarak, and when he was deposed the Muslim Brotherhood instantly converted from a Religious group (which had been permitted to exist) to a political party (which previously had not been allowed) giving them a big leg up and they won the election, installing Morsi as the leader of the country... and the middle-class and up revolted and chose to go back to a military dictatorship rather than live under a fundamentalist Islamic government. Islamicists say that modern economic success corrupts people... fundamentalism generally only appeals to the poor and angry who think they're being oppressed, and the cause preaches dominating the people they believe are oppressing them.

In the US, Muslim immigrants generally have a very positive view of the country and feel good about their lives, here (especially compared to the places they've come from)... and are more likely to be highly educated than native-born Americans. Native-born Muslims here tend to be more pessimistic and see themselves as being discriminated against for being Muslim if they come from an economically disadvantaged background...

In a nutshell, poor people feel left out and angry, and they look for an outlet for that, and that makes them easily radicalized... or generally, anybody who feels left out, overlooked, and looked down upon is the same way.

The Left's current fanatical Gaza obsession, for instance, is really about them feeling powerless because the Democratic party coalesced around Biden in the 2020 Primary and Clinton in the 2016 Primary and stopped Sanders. They feel powerless... they also seemed to bizarrely blame AIPAC for blocking Sanders (a pro-Isreal Jewish American)... and Gaza is the perfect "moral cause" to fight the power over/with... Palestinians have always been screwed, just as much by their own "leaders" as hardline Israeli governments, but the fever pitch at the moment is about something else, really.... power. They have no concern or even knowledge of Modi's Hindu supremacist government in India doing the exact same thing to Muslims that Israel has... and since - as I've mentioned an African American Political Science professor I know jokes - that situation isn't as easy to look at and conclude "okay, that side is the evil white people," they probably won't ever care.
