quote:But that result was entirely predictable. There was always hope against hope for a Ukrainian miracle. But with many here, hope merged to expectation. That's where several "pro-Ukrainian posters" jumped the shark into fantasy.
the counterattack has been a dud.
As I've said, this travesty of a war should have never occurred. It stems from several issues we controlled: (1) 2008 - The NATO Bucharest Summit, (2) 2014 - The US backed coup d'état in Ukraine, (3) 2015-2022 - Minsk Accords exposed as Western duplicity, (4) 2021 - Biden Admin incompetence (being kind)
It is likely that without as few as one of the four above, thousands of Ukraine's killed/maimed young men would be leading happy lives right now, instead. I find that incredibly sad. So will Ukraine, btw, at some point in the future. The legacy of ' The Ugly American."
The quagmire is devolving into an increasingly asymmetrical airpower senario, with the threat of further Russian gains on the horizon. The longer we prolong an inevitable territory ceding settlement, the more likely an anti-American sentiment is to settle into the future Ukrainian mindset.
The glass half-full viewpoint, holds that Putin entered the war expecting to walk over Ukraine. Reality was very different. So, the likelihood of Putin attempting a similar attack again is low.

Kyiv’s Forces to Liberate all Ukraine, Regardless of Timeframe – Kuleba
“The truth is that until we have won, we need more, we need to move forward, because war is a reality, and in this reality, we need to win. There is no other way,” he told AFP.
by AFP | August 17, 2023, 11:59 am
Ukraine’s military will liberate all territory occupied by Russian forces regardless of how long it takes, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told AFP this week, adding this was the Ukrainian people’s wish.
“Our goal is victory, victory in the form of the liberation of our territories within (Ukraine’s) borders of 1991. And we don’t care how long it takes,” he said during an interview in Kyiv.
“As long as the Ukrainian people share this goal, the Ukrainian government will move hand in hand with its own people.”

Comes off desparate. Must be seeing weakness from the West.

Just rip the bandaid off and provide direct kinetic support in the form of cruise missiles and drones.
It’s time to bully the bully
I saw a pretty interesting video. Apparently the Russian mine fields are visible in infrared. Drones fly over in early evenings when the ground is cooler than the mines. It’s amazing to see the number of mines on the ground

The second Russian Ka-52 was shot down in the morning
IRYNA BALACHUK – THURSDAY, 17 AUGUST 2023, 09:37 AM
Soldiers of the 47th separate mechanized brigade shot down an enemy Ka-52 helicopter in Zaporizhzhia region on the morning of August 17 – thus this morning the defenders of Ukraine destroyed two Russian "alligators".
Source: 47th Brigade on Facebook
Literally 47th Brigade: "The morning of soldiers of the 47th separate mechanized brigade began with the destruction of a Russian Ka-52 helicopter near Robotino, Zaporizhzhia."
Details: The enemy "alligator" was spotted by the fire group of the anti-aircraft missile and artillery battalion around 07:40 am. The helicopter was shot down by one launch with MANPADS.
It is reported that on the account of the fighters of the 47th brigade is the 8th "forever grounded Ka-52", the cost of which reaches $16 million.
Prehistory:
Earlier, Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykola Oleshchuk said that the defenders of Ukraine destroyed an enemy Ka-52 attack helicopter in the Bakhmut direction on the morning of August 17.

Recent Russian failures and Ukraine successes were reasons to believe a counterattack could succeed.
Now how successful it would be was just a guess.

I have already commented on this at some level.. but suffice it to say I agree..

Biden Admin is incompetent!!... On points 1 thru 3 .. none of these happened in a vacuum, I think (and there is of course room for debate here..) the ongoing aggressive posture of Putin/Russia accounts for much of this..

What is happening in Ukraine has to more do with Russia's expansionist goals than us...

I am challenging this thought in light of this...

The legacy of ' The Ugly American."
If anything I think Ukraine would be "angry" at our slow support..
All things are subject to change but at the moment, Ukraine seems committed to getting what is their's back..

Do you have a link to that? I'd be interested to see it. I was thinking earlier about how deadly areas are going to be for decades after this conflict because of mines.
Posted on 8/17/23 at 1:50 pm to AllDayEveryDay
Part of why this conflict is going to end up frozen is Russia has basically already made a DMZ with those mines. They can’t go forward, either. The areas where either side can make a meaningful push have been significantly narrowed.

There was a link to it here a few days back.

I made this post about it a few days ago, no video but you can clearly see the mines standing out on the thermal image snapshot.

Ukraine war latest: Military reports progress south of newly liberated Urozhaine, Azov Brigade returns to eastern front line
by Alexander Khrebet and The Kyiv Independent news desk August 17, 2023 11:39 PM
Key developments on Aug. 17:
Ukraine extends martial law until Nov. 15
Ukrainian forces reportedly use cluster munitions to reclaim Urozhaine in Donetsk Oblast
Russia deports 450 more Ukrainian children, military says
Germany, Sweden send military aid to Ukraine
Azov Brigade deployed to Luhansk Oblast
Ukrainian forces continue their counteroffensive in three areas in the southeast and east of the country as Russian troops try to reclaim lost positions in some areas along the 1,200-kilometer-long front line.
Russian counterattacks failed near the newly liberated village of Urozhaine in Donetsk Oblast, Colonel Mykola Urshalovych reported on Aug. 17.
The 35th Separate Marine Brigade and other units reclaimed Urozhaine a day earlier. The General Staff reported an advance down the Mokri Yaly River on Aug. 17.
Urozhaine, which sits alongside the Morki Yaly River south of Velyka Novosilka, is the latest in a string of liberated settlements in the area since Ukraine launched its counteroffensive in early June.
Ukrainian forces likely used either U.S.-supplied cluster munitions or domestically-produced alternatives while liberating Urozhaine, CNN reported on Aug. 17, citing unnamed experts.
Drone footage of the battlefield around the settlement showed Russian soldiers retreating southward while under fire by what weapons experts identified as possible cluster munitions, according to CNN.

Several Russian leaning accounts are predicting a significant push on the Tokmak axis in the next couple of weeks.

As an aside, I find the last tweet interesting as we have seen this echoed here quite frequently.

Ok so this post is going to be relevant again if Ukraine actually starts assaulting the way I thought they would’ve back in June. It only took 75 days and the 9th corps but the final big push is likely coming in the next week or two. The goal will likely be Tokmak and potentially…
I truly hope no offensive occurs in any direction and no more boys have to suffer and never go home. Its really difficult listening to the madness all day and watching people seemingly cheering this on and pretending that this is entertainment or a game. If you’re religious I’d ask that you say a prayer for all the men wishing they were home tonight, most are just normal people like you and I who have all the skin in the game but never see the rewards.

So we have the last two of Ukraine’s premier brigades (the 82nd and 46th) in the field on the Orikhiv-Tokmak axis, likely entering combat at scale soon - already a few Marders and Strykers have gone over. Probably an intensified Ukrainian push coming very soon.
The rest of Ukraine’s mechanized package has been degraded over the course of the summer. No unit destruction, but much of it is unfit for offensive operations and needs to refit or reconstitute.
The AFU needs to make their progress towards Tokmak by the end of September. They’ll probably hit the gas and try hard for a breach in the next couple of weeks.

The JOSEPH SCHULTE has been stuck in Odesa since the beginning of the full scale invasion but is now making her way out of Ukrainian waters.
It is notable that she is loaded with cargo which Russia will not have inspected. Her current destination is set to Ambarli, Türkiye.

A quick reminder that this ship is not part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, getting these ships out of Ukraine is purely a humanitarian issue after 538 days of being stuck in port. As well, it’s commendable they were able to continue enough maintenance to keep her seaworthy.
The ship JOSEPH SCHULTE is now reporting AIS from Romanian waters and headed towards the Constanta anchorage.

It stemmed from Putin ordering an invasion. And changing his story multiple times as to why.
Ukraine was no closer to joining NATO when he invaded than they were 5 years ago.
Now Putin has gone and fricked around, and finding out that NATO is as strong as ever.

Only 18 months after they were needed. I guess that is still pretty good for government work.
