Ukraine’s Ammunition Chief Battles to Boost Production
Ukraine’s Ammunition Chief Battles to Boost Production
quote:
KYIV, Ukraine—Like any good boss, Oleksandr Kamyshin keeps on top of production numbers for the factories he oversees. But for Kamyshin, Ukraine’s minister of strategic industries, it is a matter of life and death: The figures that land on his desk every morning show ammunition output at dozens of Ukrainian factories.
quote:
Kamyshin has delivered before. As head of Ukraine’s state railway company, he kept goods and people flowing after the country’s airspace was closed in the early days of the invasion. Ukrzaliznytsia’s trains ferried civilians and foreign dignitaries including President Biden, who traveled to Kyiv last year on a train dubbed Rail Force One.
But bringing Ukraine’s defense industry up to speed in the middle of a war is an even bigger challenge.
quote:
The numbers are secret, but it will be years before Ukraine can produce enough ammunition to meet current needs, he said. “I’m climbing Kilimanjaro,” Kamyshin said. “It’s like the end of the first day.”
For now Kyiv is dependent on Western countries that are also struggling to increase production after running down their own ammunition stockpiles. The U.S. recently provided Kyiv with cluster munitions to help alleviate a looming shortage as Ukrainian forces struggle to break through Russian defenses in the south of the country. European states, too, struck a deal last month mobilizing half a billion euros to boost ammunition production for Ukraine—and for themselves.
quote:
The war was a year old by the time Kamyshin was appointed as chief of the defense industry, but to him it felt like the very first days of the invasion. “Being in charge of a large, crucial, critical structure for your country for the war when nothing works,” he said.
quote:
Kamyshin’s immediate priority was ammunition, which Ukrainian forces are consuming at a rate of about 90,000 shells a month, according to U.S. officials. To spur production, he visited dozens of factories, which have been dispersed across the country and abroad to make them harder for Russia to strike.
It surprised Kamyshin to find that some factories weren’t working round the clock or over the weekend, he said. “In the second year of the war everyone should be working 24/7.”
His new team of like-minded deputies includes a new head of state-owned weapons manufacturer Ukroboronprom. “These people know that you can’t say ‘Let’s talk Monday,’ ” he said.
quote:
Taking a similar approach of borrowing from the private sector in Ukraine, Kamyshin has extended defense companies’ contracts to year-end—rather than monthly—and brought in more firms to gear production toward the defense industry. “It’s not rocket science,” he said.
By the end of the year, Ukraine will be producing NATO-standard 155mm ammunition as well as the Soviet 152mm and 122mm calibers already produced.

JUST IN: The Army is up to making 24K artillery shells/month, Army acquisition chief Doug Bush says this morning.
"Soon to get to 28,000 a month with a path to in excess of 80,000 a month over the following year. So that ramp up is really about to kick in."

I don’t see Putin being blamed
For this a lot in this thread
He’s diverting attention away from
His decaying country. Trying to distract
His populace away from his failures
He judged this all wrong and not a smart guy like Trump said

Very sad.
I find it hard to believe that in this day and age one of the largest countries in the world believes they still need to conquer their neighbors.
It’s like we are rolling the clock back to the early 1900s, and for what? So Russia can get back the resorts in Odessa, so Putin can build a statue of himself, and Russia can brag about being a world power?
Really what’s the end game for Russia? They won’t be more secure. They are creating problems for themselves not making it better.

This is interesting. Not directly Ukraine related, but touches on the broader geopolitical issues that get discussed here vis a vis BRICS economy. Apparently Mongolia is looking to escape the Chinese/Russian orbit and engaged with the west. I would have assumed they were in absolute lockstep with the Chinese, but it seems there's a lot of hostility. If we got favorable trade arrangements with Mongolia, that could be huge given their natural resources. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise because the Chinese and to a lesser extent, Russians, probably treat them like a vassal state.

of course, SirWinston and his BRICS buddies on the PB would rather China/Russia get exclusive rights to Mongolia's copper and lithium deposits.

We need Mongolia to channel their inner Khan and start wreaking havoc across the Steppes again.
Well,we may not need it. But I would love to see it.

Hey Ruff, welcome back to the thread. How are things in Russia these days?
Hello. I haven't been here for a long time.
We have a lot of news. Are you interested in something specific?

Can someone unpack this a little to explain what the big picture meaning of this?
The US is now producing shells at this level, and is working toward an 80k/month target? Does anyone know how many of these are made/earmarked for Ukrainian delivery systems and what the current spend rate is of the Ukrainians?
What was the US producing in January 2021?

He hasn't posted in a long time though
ETA: iirc your son was deployed. How is he?
No, except for WeeWee, was a lheujq liar.
I also wrote him a screenshot in Russian, asked him to translate what was written there. If he really would have had friends there, he would have answered me here. The son was returned home. They said that he was very young and hot. as a father I am glad. But friends are gone

We need the production moving forward even if none is sent to ukraine. The war has demonstrated that stockpiles were insufficient to sustain capabilities if we were to be in such a type of conflict for any extended period of time.
The fact all you can do is bitch instead of understanding the lessons being taught is very telling.

Feel free to find another picture of him without the tattoos? Don't know what to tell you, but do you really find it hard to believe that someone who would name their PMC as a tribute to Hitler wouldn't have Nazi tattoo's
But here is a different link (no picture, but you can google search more of those if you want). I know nothing of the source other than it's a Russian link from 2016 and here is the English translation:
quote:
Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Dmitry Utkin, 46 years old. A professional military man, until 2013 he was the commander of the 700th separate special forces detachment of the 2nd separate brigade of the Special Forces of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense stationed in Pechory, Pskov Region. After leaving the reserve, he worked for the Moran Security Group, a private company specializing in the protection of ships in pirate areas. When MSG managers organized the "Slavic Corps" in 2013 and sent it to Syria to defend Bashar al-Assad, he participated in this failed expedition. Since 2014, he has been the commander of his own unit, which, according to his call sign, received the code name “Wagner PMC”.
Known for his commitment to the aesthetics and ideology of the Third Reich, hence the call sign in honor of the mystic composer. In Lugansk, the personnel shocked, changing the usual field panama for a steel helmet of the Wehrmacht - but the commander's quirks are not discussed.
