The russians received the technology that allows you to jam Starlink at front-line, –– the commander of Tactical Group "Birds of Magyar" reports.
According to Magyar, the russians are already testing and preparing the appropriate technology for industrial production.
This information has been forwarded to the competent authorities. At the same time, Magyar urged competent people to work on unified countermeasures.
"The front without Starlink is significantly more difficult than even the front without the F-16," –– writes the commander.

Why is it that people are saying NATO has outlived its usefulness, but more and more Russian neighbors want in???
I think NATO can be useful for Europeans without the United States as a part of it.

NATO would be more beneficial to Europe if it wasn't completely reliant on USA funding.

Football analogy:
NATO without US is as relevant as the BIG12 without Texas and Oklahoma.

It's only within the last two years or so that Japan has really woken up to the fact that, if China invades Taiwan and the US defends Taiwan, that China would certainly strike at US military bases in Japan, which would necessarily bring Japan into the conflict.
Japan very badly would like to stay out of such a war, but Japanese leadership has now accepted that their involvement is likely inevitable.
The war in Ukraine has had a certain clarifying effect on many in Asia who previously believed that economic ties would prevent war, just as Germany has been similarly disabused of such notions.
It's absurd for me to post about Japan doubling its military spending, and for you to respond that this has nothing to do with Ukraine. Ukrainian success in resisting aggression has convinced many of our friends in Asia that Taiwan could indeed prevail in such a conflict with China.
To be fair Japan has been shifting their defense policy for a couple of years prior to Ukraine. It’s been methodical and through changing long standing laws on their constitutional defense policy. This was/is because of continued Chinese aggression in the Pacific.
That said, yes it seems very much so the war in Ukraine has expedited this change quite rapidly, similar to Poland in Europe. These changes would not have happened without the prior legislative shift though, at minimum those shifts would have been occurring now with more delayed defense growth.

Almost certainly so. Perhaps the rest of the BIG12 should stop spending so much money on education and more money on winning.

I believe you are good-faith and, in a lot of ways, conceptually correct. It’s just entirely impractical and irresponsible to attempt.

The French embassy in Niger is attacked as protesters waving Russian flags march through the capital
quote:
Thousands of junta supporters surged through the streets of Niamey, the capital, waving Russian flags, chanting the name of the Russian president and forcefully denouncing former colonial power France. The protesters marched through the city to the French Embassy, where a door was lit on fire, according to someone who was at the embassy when it happened and videos seen by The AP. Black smoke could be seen rising from across the city. The Nigerien army broke up the crowd.
quote:
Russian mercenary group Wagner is already operating in neighboring Mali, and Russian President Vladimir Putin would like to expand his country’s influence in the region. However, it is unclear yet whether the new junta leaders will move toward Moscow or stick with Niger’s Western partners.
quote:
On Sunday at an emergency meeting in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, the West African ECOWAS bloc said it was suspending relations with Niger and authorized the use of force if the president was not reinstated within a week. “In the event the authorities’ demands are not met within one week, (we will) take all measures necessary to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. Such measures may include the use of force. To this effect, the chiefs of defense staff of ECOWAS are to meet immediately,” Omar Alieu Touray, president of the ECOWAS commission, said after the meeting.

At the end of the day, Africa will be Africa. It is still mostly Tribal in nature. As in they still look at them self’s through tribal affiliations rather than a country.
Happy for them to kick out a “colonial Pwer” but replacing them with China or Russia will not end well long term. Both China and Russias goal in Africa is resource driven. They are not there to promote growth from 3rd world to 1st world.
Russia will provide “security” at a high price. Think of mafia style protection fees.

About a thousand percent chance that Russians are passing out cash and Russian flags at these protests.

I wonder if Russian citizens are raising hell about Putin passing out Russian treasure on another continent?

Well there’s a good chance we’ll lose 2 separate billion dollar bases we’ve built in the country because Russia spent maybe a million bucks. And the odds of the average Russia knowing anything about Niger or Mali is probably about as low as the average American knowing we have over a thousand troops and have spent billions in the region.

Which will then end up replaced by Chinese bases and presence disguised as good will to the citizens for a while until they use it all for their resources and make the elites wealthy and keep the average African poor as frick

It’s a matter of what each get in return for their investment.

If you’re talking strictly ROI… the amount of real world knowledge of our weapons systems that’s been gained at the expense of zero American lives is substantial.

That cuts both ways. The enemy, including China, is gaining a bunch of intel on our weapons systems as well. But I wouldn’t use that as an argument against providing aid to Ukraine.

Sounds like our southern border except the enemy, our own politicians, are those aiding and abetting.
