Hypothically, securing and controlling Taiwanese trade goods, ie semiconductors, is of more global value than Russia/Ukraine. I don’t think sanctions can attempt address the semiconductor problem.

About this, both the Trump and Biden administration were unified, where the Trump admin began the process of limiting Chinese access to semiconductors while the Biden administration completed it. The Biden admin effectively crippled the Chinese tech industry, while the CHIPS Act offered such generous subsidies for chip manufacturers that will hopefully produce results.

In this respect, given that the Biden's and Trump's actions were largely bipartisan (though I can't remember what the left said about Trump's actions against Huiwei), it does reveal what the circle of policymakers are concerned about long-term, which is to retain the US's significant technology advantage versus possible rivals. Hopefully these policies will bear some fruit and hopefully they will actually lead to a further increased technology gap between the US and China.

VOA defense reporter tweet:

quote:

US is providing up to $325 million in more military aid for #Ukraine, a defense official tells VOA, in a package expected to be announced tomorrow.

PDA 40 to include:
*#Strykers & #Bradleys that can replace those damaged & destroyed
*Munitions for NASAMS & #HIMARS

Of course, there's no evidence that Strykers have even seen combat yet in Ukraine, much less been destroyed, so I think that "damaged & destroyed" bit is inaccurate. We're simply giving Ukraine more combat power, which they need to continue the offensive. We've likely trained more crews in Germany, so now those crews can get their actual vehicles to use.

I could be wrong but I don’t see a war with China on the immediate horizon. No massive trading partners have ever gone to war in the history of the world. And they are one of our largest trade partners. China is too smart for that, they don’t want a war they want to expand their sphere of influence, that’s the one true thing they have ever said. In war everyone loses, they would lose their entire trade with the west and thus their economy would be destroyed, Xi or whatever his name is would be replaced etc. they are very patient people they will wait 1000 years to get what they want, they aren’t going to make stupid rash decisions like Putin did. It’s not their way

Problem is control of Taiwan expands their sphere of influence greatly depending on the response from the rest of the world.

… (as was Nicholas), and Field Marshal in the Russian Army , George was a Field Marshal in both Germany and Russia. And Nicholas was a German Field Marshal. In fact, both Nicholas and George were honorary commanders of German cavalry regiments.

Their Type 10 MBT may not be the best tank in the world and probably has an old infotainment system (surely lacks Apple CarPlay) but I bet they will go 400,000 miles with just routine maintenance.

After a week or so of training/dummy runs Russian bomber aviation are up in force today. Curious to see if they resume targeting Kyiv and western targets or if they have more of a focus closer to the front.

But war happened bc the small elite inner circles running countries like German Empire and Russian Empire felt threatened.

WW1 happened because Germany declared a general mobilization, active component and reserves.

At that point in history that was a declaration of war. Then your neighbors mobilize all their strength, like dominoes falling.

In closing, Japan has much more room to use their political power than one would think, and is planning for a security situation that could rapidly deteriorate, which will force their hand, regardless of their other issues.

How much of a limiting factor is their small current military and debt load in your opinion? That’s what worries me for them in this context, and for us with respect to the debt long term should the worst occur.

But the real cost comparison isn't the cost of the tank decoy compared to the cost of the Lancet. The real comparison is the cost of the decoy compared to the cost of the real armored vehicle or artillery piece that the Lancet might have otherwise found and destroyed.

That is part and parcel of what I was trying to say, the comparative costs between the two items are irrelevant it is the total "costs" (not just pecuniary) of the use/loss of each one on their respective countries. A decoy may prevent the loss of life or material but it has much larger effect if/when the Lancet et al drones become a limiting factor for Russia. Russia may or may not be at the point they are counting Lancets but if/when they are that is when decoys have the biggest impact.

A plant upset in Japan a decade or so back had a huge impact on the computer chip, flat screens, and circuits industry. That is where most of the high purity chemicals for the industry are made.

I came across it through https://twitter.com/HelloMrBond who is a bit of a foci lens for the OSINT community. I have not run across the below account before so can't vouch for their integrity but from their post history they appear objective with a Ukraine lean.

They have done a tremendous job in collating various videos and stills together to provide a coherent picture of what happened in the area that the 47th Mech performed their failed attack on and highlights just how much this has been milked by Russian sources to give the appearance of a broader strategic failure in the early stages of the counter offensive.

4 hours of work later...
I reconstructed and geolocated the route and losses of one of the two columns of the 47th mechanized brigade. Of course, I also used the work of other OSINT people, but many of the given locations were inaccurate and the place of the destruction of M2 and L2A6 was wrong.
Freeze frames from movies added to the orientation of what was where.
This column had a difficult fate: it was surrounded by drone-corrected artillery 3x, it defeated 2 groups of mines, and finally, while overcoming the second one, it fell under the fire of Ka-52's Wihr ATGMs and ATGMs as well as artillery.
Really KUDOS to the soldiers of this battalion because they went through hell that day.
P.S. location and slides from the second (west) column will be uploaded later. This is the one whose end was supposedly photoshopped.

Honestly I think the best thing Japan can give them are hundreds of small trucks. Ukraine has really went full Mad Max on normal trucks putting a thing from machine guns with searchlights for mobile short range anti air defense. They also put a 120 mm or 81 mm mortar in the bed of the trucks to make them a form of mobile artillery. Then of course there are the ones where they make “mini grads” where they stick a small grad rocket launching system in the bed that can shoot anywhere from 4-8 rockets. It’s not normal military hardware but these little modifications Ukraine has made to make their forces more mobile than the Russians and with hundreds more they would be able to cover a lot of ground.

Another fun fact: Kaiser Wilhelm had a withered arm he was very self conscious about and his foreign policy aggressiveness was likely a means of compensating.

This is some very nitty gritty video of a Ukraine assault.

Good find, thankyou - as many in the comment thread mention, we watch so many of these videos at the moment, having someone there to analyse the video brings home just how brutal things are on the front.
