Also the Russian airforce seems to be having a bad day.
Various reports, noted in this Noelreports thread of up to 4 different aviation misfortunes today including a SU-34, a MI-8 and a "lost" SU-25.

I beat you on the Swiss stuff but you beat me on the missing planes

We’ll see if they end up being right, but with the recent massive increase in Western appetite to arm Ukraine, it’s clear to me that the West currently believes Ukraine has a serious chance at a knock out blow in the short to mid term and have decided they want to be able to say they contributed to the winning side.

That's an expensive day

Speculation is that its friendly fire. Could be a second order effect of Storm Shadow strikes.

Not immediately. Something else that I read indicated that the changes still have to be approved by a national referendum.

Yeah, something is up. Reports are saying that everything was shot down with MANPADS, and the belief is that Ukrainian SOF infiltrated from across the border and shot the aircraft down.
I think that seems likely. I could believe that one or two aircraft were victims of friendly fire. It's very hard to believe that friendly fire shot down four aircraft in the same area on the same day.

Other people think that Ukraine pushed a Patriot system up close to the border and that it shot all four down. That also seems plausible.
I do not believe that four Russian aircraft were shot down in the same area on the same day by friendly fire.

If Ukraine shot those down, that’s an insanely successful day and has to make Russian pilots pucker even more.

For Russian morale, either panic from friendly fire, SOF units with MANPADS, or the weird idea of a Patriot battery, has to strike fear. Any idea of being invincible, tarnished over a year ago, is now gone.

With all the news the past few days, we are definitely seeing a change in Ukrainian tactics.
1) longe range attacks (command & control and/or supplies/staging?)
2) localized offensive attacks/gains in bakhmut area
3) Russia aviation losses (command or counter measure destroyed?)
4) increase in information space “warfare”
5) announcement of new weapon systems/and use of undisclosed weapon systems reported (counter measure drone coupled with long range strike)
Sounds like we are seeing the early phases of a counter operation. Russia is chasing ghosts and the milblog community is ar high anxiety right now.

I think that the Jack Teixeira story is now firmly in the realm of the Poliboard, as there's no longer any real impact on this conflict, and I'm not going to discuss it in depth, but there's a long profile story in today's Washington Post, complete with videos of him doing stuff like cursing n*****s while shooting his rifle. It's the Post, so of course the story has a left-wing bias, but the basic facts here are obvious.

Its shaping operations.
True counter offensive hasnt started yet, but the groundwork is being laid

If you have ever done any training or war gaming/war fighter with a foreign army you can see how badly they want what we have.
The Egyptians would show up an hour early for MDMP...and everyday there were more showing up even if they had no role in the exercise, they just wanted to see the sausage getting made.

Russia does indeed have EW rotor wing aircraft and they are on the MI-8 airframe.
