re: Latest Updates: Russia-Ukraine Conflict

While I love more Marders and especially the IRIS-T systems going to Ukraine I would happily trade those 30 Leopard 1A5 tanks for 30 more Gepard AA systems. Not to say the tanks won’t help but the more air defense help the better the odds of the counter offensive being successful and they can move with the offensive to provide AA defense for Russian CAS sorties.

Shaping conditions
Setting vs shaping conditions may be unit cultural or era cultural. We always set conditions be it operational, strategic or tactical. Lakeboy was in the same Division as I was but at a slightly later time.
I primarily see shaping today but old habits die hard. A POG (person other than grunt) is a REMF (rear echelon motherfricker) to me and I find it far more poetic. CBRN (chemical biological radiological nuclear) is NBC (nuclear biological chemical) to me. ACUs (Army Combat Uniform) are BDUs (Battle Dress Uniform) to me.
I don't know what they call tactical patience now but we always had to practice tactical patience when setting conditions.

You didn't see the 15 additional Gepards in the assistance package? Or you meant on top of the 15?
In any case, this assistance package, timed at the start of the offensive, has to significantly affect morale.
I would love for Biden to announce another 200 Bradleys tomorrow. If we are running low on authorized money, we can use Lend-Lease.

Russian media says all four crews died. Also Russian reports that the two choppers were not just Mi-8 but expensive Mi-8 MTPR1 long-range electronic warfare systems that suppress enemy air defense radars. Russia operated only about 20 of these.
This is something that I feel certain that Russia cannot replace under the current sanctions.

This is probably SAMP, Aspide, and other air defense systems.

No I didn’t see that they were getting any Gepards in the package thank you. They are invaluable for low flying aircraft. With the losses that Russia is taking to their aviation units right now you have to think they are very gun shy right now. Knocking those EW choppers out of the sky was huge. Those won’t be replaceable. Most of all the crews died. The aircraft themselves are very expensive but people forget the importance and time and money that goes into training pilots. Losing experienced aircrews has got to be a problem for Russia right now and even the crews that remain are no doubt effected by the number of losses they are taking. I would bet my truck that those Mi-8 EW helicopters were crewed by senior pilots due to the importance of their mission.

It’s official now.
On a separate development, the German government announced it would provide further military equipment worth €2.7bn (£2.4bn) to Ukraine in what would be the largest sum Berlin has provided since Russia’s invasion.
Russian troops fall back to ‘defensive positions’ near Bakhmut

The package includes 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 30 Leopard 1 tanks, 15 Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, 200 reconnaissance drones, four additional Iris-T anti-aircraft systems including ammunition, additional artillery ammunition and more than 200 armoured combat and logistics vehicles, according to Der Spiegel.
“We all wish for a speedy end to this terrible and illegal war … Unfortunately, this is not yet foreseeable. Therefore, Germany will provide any help it can – as long as it takes,” the German defence minister, Boris Pistorius, said on Saturday.
I wonder how soon this will happen. I would assume that the Germans could get this to Ukraine in a few weeks if they already have it ready and staged.
Maybe this is part of the needed reinforcements once the counterattack begins. Also, we all now that there is going to be a lot of equipment, weapon systems, advisors that isn’t ever going to be announced right ?

Some people are sharing a video of another purported helicopter crash and saying that it's crash #5 today, but it instead appears to be one of the two known helicopter crashes -- just recorded from another angle.

I still don't think it was friendly fire, but this was too good not to share.

This is very well stated for the current mood.

It’s hard to tell and we might not ever know for sure but just from the video I don’t think it was a Patriot or NASAMS type system. Looks like a smaller weapon, probably a Stinger or Igla. Also it’s becoming clear this war is a test run for weapons from other countries in battlefield conditions. The Boxer RCH 155 has never been used by any military so Ukraine will be the first to see how well these howitzers perform. Once the ground dries I think these wheeled howitzers like the RCH and the French Caesar are going to be invaluable to Ukraine enabling them to shoot and scoot much easier than tracked SPGs. Now it’s becoming clear why Zelensky is holding back on the attack. I don’t think Germany is going to be only country to announce new aid packages in the next couple weeks.

Looks like an active day for Russian missile strikes. They’ve reportedly hit either a weapons or fuel depot in western Ukraine.

I wonder if Russia finally realized that the electricity grid isn't the same thing as a weapons depot
Posted on 5/13/23 at 3:59 pm to DabosDynasty
They said it was a fuel depot with old diesel but who really knows. Diesel doesn’t go boom like jet fuel or gas would so I question if that was just diesel. Hopefully it wasn’t anything too vital. Ukraine can’t afford to have ammo dumps wiped out when every country is scraping the bottom of the barrel to get them enough artillery shells for an offensive. This is the conundrum with waiting to attack. Zelensky wants to get more air defenses and artillery shells as well as armored vehicles but the longer you wait the more time you give Russia to find critical storage areas.

They had several bombers up earlier.
I have seen some chatter in comments about an old soviet bomb depot there. Deleted speculation of it being fuel based after others with a better idea commented in the negative
There is also one doing the rounds that claims to be from Ternopil in Western Ukraine of another fuel dump being hit today but the video used is from Iran in January this year.

There is growing evidence that Russia has definitely switched to targeting supply stores.
However my conclusion regarding this is that it is a reactive rather than proactive measure. They should have been doing this months ago to eviscerate Ukraine's ability to form a counter offensive, now it just looks to be a delaying action while they try and fortify more and possibly get more troops in theatre.
Edit: Clarity, original video of fake claim and further comment.
