CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — The U. S. ambassador to South Africa accused the country Thursday of providing weapons to Russia via a cargo ship that docked secretly at a naval base near the city of Cape Town for three days in December. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said an investigation was underway.
Ambassador Reuben Brigety said the U.S. was certain that weapons were loaded onto the vessel at the Simon’s Town naval base and then transported to Russia, according to reports of his comments carried by multiple South African news outlets.

It's amazing how other nations, such as Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, North Korea ... and South Africa still interact with Russia the same way that they would with the USSR.
For reference, during the Cold War, South Africa was a US ally, which is why the US didn't put more pressure on the country to end apartheid sooner. The Soviets, in contrast, supported the ANC rebels fighting the government.
Fast forward to today, and the ANC leaders now running South Africa feel an obligation to aid Russia, because the USSR aided them dozens of years ago.
All these other nations treat Putin and his regime as the same old Commies that they have always been. It's only among some freakish corners of the American right wing that see Putin as kind of conservative champion.

Wonder if the latest in Israel will have any impact on western donations
I’d think this would have more of an impact on Iranian defense business with Russia vs a western supply issue to Israel. Israel probably just needs to be turned loose vs needing a large scale of munitions and equipment donations.

IYAM it's less about politics in any kind of traditional sense and more about ethno nationalism. They're willing to overlook a whole slew of Russian policies that should be anathema to them. Abortion on demand, strict gun control, government interference in the economy. None of that matters because Putin blows the appropriate dog whistles.
At the same time you have a few old lefties like Chomsky siding with Russia out of Soviet nostalgia.

You are dead on.
Plus many on the far right really like Putin's authoritarian style, which is the glue that holds the mutual admiration for Putin, Orban and Trump.

Chomsky has been critical of Russia in this and called the invasion hideous aggression etc. at the Same time he’s been engaging in the usual moral relativism and whataboutism. But there are certainly a ton of lefty tankies holding hands with the politard types.

Sure is a lot of chatter going on both sides about the Ukrainians trying to do a pincer movement on Bahkmut.

I still think Ukraine should withdraw from Bakhmut and set up a defensive position further to the west. The Bakhmut defense is currently a salient that can be attacked by the Russians on three sides. If they cut that east-west road all of Ukraine's forces in the city will be cut off from retreat and will eventually be forced to surrender.
No doubt, but then apparently Russia tried and could not do it.
Now who is exposed? Are Russian positions exposed to a counterattack? They aren’t dug in, they are largely spent. Could Ukrsine now turn the tables and attack the exposed Russian pincers???

It worked last year in their offensives. And Russians adapting is somewhere between slow to non existent.
And now instead of stopping for rain/winter in December like last year they can continue fighting as long as their supply lines don't get targeted and can keep up.

Numerous reports in Russian channels about Ukrainian forces having begun a larger offensive in several directions. This follows reports of Wagner struggling in Bakhmut in the recent days. Current reports are very conflicting, some mention Ukrainians moving towards Russian border. We still have to see if any of this is real, but the situation is rather similar to September and November regroupings.

Commentary on whats going on in Bakhmut from Grikin. More evidence of disarray from the Russians.
