Since the end of the Cold War, NATO has been a joke in many ways, but there is lots and lots of this happening:

LINK

quote:

The Defense Commission, which is presented on Wednesday, proposes an increase of 70 billion in the defense budget. That is almost a doubling of today's budget.

quote:

This year, Norway is spending 1.43 per cent of GDP on defence, which is NOK 32 billion short of the NATO target of spending two per cent .

The Defense Commission therefore proposes that Norway should meet the two per cent target only through the increase of 30 billion to the ordinary increase in the budget.

On top of this, the commission therefore proposes 40 billion every year for the next ten years to cover the backlog of investments.¨

COPENHAGEN, May 2 (Reuters) - Denmark will donate military equipment and financial support to Ukraine worth 1.7 billion Danish crowns ($250 million), the Nordic country's Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said on Tuesday.

$250 million USD is a lot of money for a small country like Denmark.

A prominent Ukrainian today told folks to prepare for two or three more years of warfare. So we are in the second inning, if true.

I see it as a seven game series. Game one began in 2014. Game two Feb of 22. I think there eill be a cease fire. After a few years of quasi “peace” Russia will start game 3.

Gen. Milley on total Russian casualties:

LINK

EDIT: The "I don't know" part seems operative here. We really only have a general idea of Russian casualties. In part, that's because I don't think that Russia is counting. The Teixeira leaks showed that even the FSB doesn't know.

Even if it's half of that 200-250k number he's putting out there, that is insnae to think about. That's Vietnam level casualties...in just over a year. Hell I think the US was only around 35k in Iraq with something like 4,500 or so KIA. And the official time span of "combat operations" was '03-'11. Then add Ukrainian losses to that which is probably not drastically less...it is just nuts the lives being thrown away over this.

I never thought we would witness those kinds of casualty numbers in my life without some version of WW3 breaking out. Or two large nations going at it for 5-10 years or something drastic like that.

The inability of either side to gain air superiority coupled with the weather constraints has given to a non mobile war since last November. Fixed defensive positions gives artillery and drone warfare are a big advantage and you have to take real estate with boots in the trench or urban block by block fighting.

Receipt for high casualties for both sides.

Maneuver warfare will hopefully return after rainy season but both side have been bleed deeply if manpower and ammo. So not sure if it is even possible.

Ukraine has the upper hand here. With around 500 thousand trained and LOTS of armament, not just what has been given by many nations. Remember that there are arms dealers in Europe who have, maybe had by now, stockpiles of weapons and ammo not being counted

Interesting thread on casualties:

Twitter

It is a consolidation of the work in the area by @bbcrussian and @mediazona_en

I have no idea or the veracity or possible mendacity of these two accounts but they both have a lot of interesting info on them obviously to be taken with a grain of salt.

Some of the greatest hits:

Do you know how cold Europe gets? No, he’s turning off the gas when it gets in the low teens to single digits Fahrenheit. He’s not going to do it yet.

You sound dangerously close to rooting for strikes and starvation and missile strikes from Russia

No, but it’s a strong possibility. I still think Putin’s main strategy is to starve out European energy once it gets insanely cold over there.

Hey, are you ever going to pay AbuTheMonkey his money?

Also, where are the mass riots and food shortages you were predicting? It's the middle of November now.

Yeah, and I said the shite show is going to be October-December. Tomorrow we're literally at the half way point of my timeline. You've got a long way to go. Has it crossed your mind that the Russians may have abandoned Kherson is he's about to unleash a missile strike? Because that is very much a possibility.

OML

I haven't seen delusion that strong since the days of BoarEd and the Q Thread fever dream.

That was next level astonishment. When he said the security barriers for Biden's inauguration were actually cages to detain all of the attendees.

And when that didn't happen he doubled down with the idea that Biden was talking from a fake White House and that Trump was still president.

OML didn't get that far off his rocker. But he was heading in that direction.

Russian military blogger Romanov confirms Ukrainian forces ‘penetrated 1.5km deep into defensive Russian positions’.

For context: this is near Avdiivka where recently the Russian forces had suffered a major defeat which was confirmed by both Ukraine and Russian milbloggers.

My favorite OML moment was when he called upon all of TD to literally take up arms and and start capping politicians in response to mask mandates and said that a man *should* be ready and willing to risk their lives and liberty to fight against such tyranny.

When pressed on what he was doing to fight against said tyranny he admitted that he still wore a mask whenever requested by an establishment or if it was convenient.

Ukraine withholding counteroffensive details from allies

Politico

quote:

Kyiv is holding close the details of its spring counteroffensive in an attempt to prevent the leak of sensitive information that could compromise its positions on the battlefield, according to two European officials who are in touch with military leaders in Ukraine.

The officials said their Ukrainian counterparts have cited the alleged leak of the classified documents from Massachusetts Air Guardsman JACK TEIXEIRA as one of the reasons Kyiv is holding back from sharing counteroffensive information, including its timing, where and how many troops they plan to move into position for the operation.

quote:

A U.S. defense official said there hasn’t been any change and that Washington and Kyiv still have the same level of information-sharing. There have been no signs of Ukraine keeping anything from the U.S., the official continued.

National Security Council spokesperson JOHN KIRBY, asked by NatSec Daily if the administration feared being kept in the dark by the Ukrainians, said silence ahead of the launch wouldn’t be a surprise. “They don’t have an obligation to notify us or tell us in advance,” he told reporters Monday, adding “oftentimes we certainly do have a sense because we’re in daily communication with them.”

The U.S. still supports Ukrainian operations with real-time information and intelligence, Kirby continued. “What we’re focused on is not whether we get some sort of heads up. We’re focused on making sure that they have everything they need for when they’re ready to go.

Other Biden administration officials insist that Ukraine has never been fully open with the United States about its military plans.
