Interested to hear thoughts on this take.
That's what everyone is hoping for, but it is entirely idealistic, unfortunately.

- Putin gets to declare a "win", pulls back
Unless he's been bullshitting all along, Putin wants a regime change in Ukraine. He wants Zelensky and his government out. He called them neo-nazis and drug addicts, for crying out loud.
He can't guarantee that Ukraine will stop pursuing NATO membership unless he has his puppet in charge. That's why I don't think anything will come from these talks.
IMO, the best chance for ending this matter peacefully rests with the Russian people themselves. If they make enough noise in voicing their displeasure, maybe Putin will decide to pull back. But I'm afraid he's too far gone at this point.

Putin will win this battle. This conflict matters deeply to him. The western powers don’t have to will to keep Ukraine that Putin does to take it back.
How does Russia fare in the long run with all the sanctions? I have no idea. But Putin will win this battle and Ukraine will be under Russian control.
It took the U.S. 3 weeks to take Iraq. We’re only on day 5 in Ukraine.

With a continued strangling economically, I'm starting to wonder how many more days or weeks the Russian citizens last until they start to break down. Panic buying, inflation and scarcity may lead to looting and violence?

Money has to be an issue with pressure coming from both oligarchs who are bleeding it everyday and the cost of the war.
Russia only spends $60 billion a year on defense and I've seen claims that the war is costing him from $2 billion/day to the head of MI6 saying it's $15 billion/day. The financial pressure has to be immense.

A chaotic Moscow over food and staples would be so humiliating for Putin and the entire country

It takes folks like Roman Abramovich, the Russian owner of Chelsea FC, to convince the Russian government that their actions are costing them dearly.
With these sanctions, Abramovich may not be able to actually keep ownership of the club. He's already stepped aside in running the club, but if he can no longer afford to own it, it's very unlikely that he'll blame anyone but the Russian government for it happening.
Abramovich and Putin have a close relationship, so that's another area where hope for a peaceful resolution can reside.

The oligarch response is going to be critical for sure. Russia is an oligarch-kleptocracy and that cabal is quickly losing net wealth, property, and countries who will allow them in.
There is a reason why Putin keeps like 30 feet between he and his closest advisors

People are mad at Orban for not letting lethal weapons move through Hungary
He's in a tight spot. Probably doing what's best for his government (and arguably his people), but he'll get hammered for it due to his ties to Putin.
Orban's Hungary is what all the Poli Board thinks Putin's Russia is.

It’s sad that we have to educate people that war isn’t as fast as a call of duty game

Yea every picture they've shown of him talking to advisors in last 2 days reaks of a man trying not to get assassinated. Having a update with your top military advisors and generals? Yea why not sit 20 ft away and have them surrounded by cameras.
Go look at old school pictures of putin meeting with advisors. It's been his move to sit at a tiny 1 on 1 desk over the years. He sits right in people's faces and kgb's their will away. What changed?

I noticed that too, have people speculated on it? I'm sure they have I just haven't seen a lot of chatter.
In my mind it certainly looks like you describe, like he wants nobody within striking distance of him and eyes on whoever he is meeting with, presumably by security.
Could be COVID, or COVID as cover, I suppose. I vaguely think I recall seeing a similar thing some months ago w/ Putin.

It’s been said the Putin is terrified of covid. Who knows whether that’s true or not.

I think he has health problems and COVID is a concern, but I also think he's enjoying the secondary benefits of protection against injection of plutonium or some other radioactive element

he surrounds himself with yes men, obviously if he is met with opposition they get sent to the gulag. that's never good when you dont allow anyone to talk you down.
